Marvin Clyde Schutt - Class of 1947
Submitted by Fran Olson Gustafson 1965 <fgustafson917@gmail.com> on 30/May/2019 174.22.226.137

Marvin Schutt lived by Albert Einstein's quote, "Look deep into nature…and then
you will understand everything much better." Whether it was enjoying the views
of Smith Cove from his home fondly called "Inverurie" (cottage-by-the-sea),
plying the waters of the Niantic River and Long Island Sound, or hiking the
trails of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve, Marvin was in his element
outside. And if he was sharing those outdoor activities with his wife, Marilyn,
or family and friends, it was that much better for him. Marvin Clyde Schutt was
born October 29, 1929 in Kingston, New York, a son of the late Everett Van
Keuren Schutt and Lillian (Metcalf) Schutt. Raised in Newburgh, New York, he was
a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and later earned his Bachelor's degree in
Physics from Syracuse University in 1951. ??Marvin married Marilyn Gallo on July
26, 1952 in The Church of the Transfiguration in Marilyn's hometown of Freeport,
New York. Residents of East Lyme, Connecticut since 1957 they transitioned to
the Masonicare at Mystic retirement community in January 2017 where they easily
adapted to their new environment and the many residents they quickly called
friends. Professionally, Marvin's passion for boating and water landed him a
long career as a Nuclear Engineer and Administrator at General Dynamics in its
Electric Boat Division where he worked over 37 years, enjoying retirement in
1993. Marvin believed strongly in giving back to the community and as a result
made East Lyme and beyond a better place to live. With a passion for
conservation, history and politics, he was a member and past-president of the
East Lyme Historical Society, co-founder of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature
Preserve, past-president of The Friends of Samuel Smith House, former member of
the East Lyme Board of Selectmen where he served as deputy first Selectmen,
member, and First Trustee of South Union Chapel, and a long-standing member of
the Freemasons. He was honored as the Rotary Club Man of the Year in 2012 for
his many contributions to East Lyme as a conservationist and outstanding
citizen. Marvin's passion for boating afforded him time on the water cruising
the Niantic River, Long Island Sound and inlets along the Connecticut coast and
beyond, including many boat trips to his in-laws' home in Cutchogue, New York.
He was also passionate about canoeing, kayaking, and rowing. Marvin and Marilyn
were very active throughout their lives and enjoyed hiking, swimming, downhill
and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and bicycling. The couple also loved
entertaining with a large circle of friends and family and always had music
playing in the background. The couple's music tastes ranged from Ella Fitzgerald
to Frank Sinatra to Billy Joel and everything in between. Marvin, Marilyn and
their friends especially enjoyed "cocktail hour" at sunset on the water followed
by a great meal where Marvin – a lover of food and condiments – savored every
bite and was always the last to finish! In addition to his wife of 67 years,
Marilyn, he leaves their children, David James Schutt (Sandra) of West Wareham,
MA, Donna Lynn Schutt (Stack Kenny) of Asheville, NC and Daniel Marvin Schutt
(Christian Flynn) of Milton, MA; his grandchildren, Anya Schutt and Derrick
Schutt-Flynn; his sister, Carol Powell (George) of Greenbank, WA; nieces and
nephews. His son, Dwight Everett Schutt died in 1974. Family and friends will
honor and remember Marvin's life by gathering on Thursday, June 20th at 11:00
a.m. at the Masonicare at Mystic Retirement Community, 45 Clara Drive, Mystic,
CT. The celebration of Marvin's life will be officiated by Rev. Alan Scott and
Rev. Cynthia Willauer. A collation will follow. There are no calling hours.
Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marvin's name may be made to
the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve http://www.oswhills.org/make-a-gift.html
or the Dwight Schutt Memorial Scholarship, East Lyme Scholarship Association, PO
Box 190, Niantic, CT 06357.
