Homer Ray McCullough, Jr., died in Newburgh NY, Wednesday June 21, 1972 in his
26th year. He lived on 128 Route 17K, Town of Newburgh, son of Mrs. Benjamin
Harris and the late Homer R. McCullough, Sr. Funeral services will be held at
Ebenezer Baptist Church, Newburgh on Saturday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Cedar
Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on this Friday evening from 7 to 9 o’clock at Perrott’s Funeral Home, Number One Grand Avenue, Newburgh.
The Evening News, June 23, 1972, NEWBURGH—Homer Ray McCullough, Jr., 25, of 128
Rt. 17K, Newburgh, died at St. Luke’s Hospital on Wednesday (June 21, 1972) of
stab wounds. Born in Texas, July 3, 1946, a son of Mrs. Benjamin Harris and the
late Homer R. McCullough, Sr., he had lived in Newburgh for 19 years and was a
member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was
wounded in Vietnam and discharged in 1971. Mr. McCullough was employed by
Wallkill Prison as an accounts clerk. Besides his mother, survivors are a
step-father, Benjamin Harris of Newburgh; a step-sister, Mrs. Betty Jane Lloyd
of Lakeland, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hattie Miles of Dallas, Texas,
and his paternal grandfather, Tom McCullough also of Dallas; and several aunts,
uncles and cousins. The Perrott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The Evening News, June 23, 1972 Newburgh Woman Held in Slaying she was charged
with murder today in the stabbing death of a Newburgh man Wednesday night. Mrs.
Lillie Irene Gibson McCray of 111 Chambers St., was charged early today with the
slaying of Homer McCullough, 26, of 128 Rt. 17K, Town of Newburgh. Police say
that she used “a large knife” and struck McCullough in the left side of the
chest in front of 111 Chambers St at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday. She was arrested at
145 Chambers St. at 1:29 a.m. by Detective Patrick P. Paglialunga and Patrolman
Philip Ginguetti. Mrs. McCray was booked at 5:20 a.m. and arraigned before City
Judge Charles J. Roskowski at 7:30 a.m. today. She was held without bail and
committed to the Orange County Jail pending a preliminary hearing set for City
Court Friday morning. Attorney Jules Levine said he would ask to have her
released in his custody at the preliminary hearing. Earl Williams of 271 Grand
St. and Houston Robinson of 71 Mullin Apartments were driving up Chambers Street
Wednesday evening when they saw McCullough on the sidewalk. They rushed him to
St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m.
The Evening News, Newburgh Woman Held in Slaying Efforts to save McCullough
proved futile at the hospital. The knife pierced the chest and apparently hit
the heart, according to police. Orange County Coroner Edward Pekar said an
autopsy will be performed at St. Luke’s Hospital today. Mrs. McCray moved to
Newburgh in April from South Carolina. Estranged from her husband, she is the
mother of “several children” according to Attorney. She was employed at Regal
Handbag as a sewing machine operator. The slaying was the fourth in Newburgh
this year and the third this month. Earlier victims were Francisco Mercado who
died after being hit by a baseball bat on May 5; Willard Dawson, shot to death
on June 9, and Mrs. Barbara Leeper, who died of a gunshot wound on June 18. Nine
homicides were recorded in Newburgh in 1971.
