John Patrick Walsh, Jr. COL US Army (Retired) Our beloved John P. Walsh, Jr., 72, passed away May 20, 2019 at home in Fairfax, VA after a valiant battle against cancer. Born in Cornwall, NY to the late John P Walsh and Clio Flanagan Walsh of Newburgh, NY, he graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Mary Virginia (Ginger) Walsh, his devoted children John III (Shivika) of PA, Timothy (Stephanie) of MA, Jenifer Walsh Steele (Todd) of VT, and Kevin (Christine) of MA, and cherished grandchildren Clio, Anaya, Liam, Ezra, and Tyan. He is also survived by sister Florence Hergenrether (Dennis) of OK, brother William (Elin) of CO, and sister Mary Elizabeth of NY, and numerous dear nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He is also deeply missed by his brothers and sisters in law, Emmett(Jeannie), Randy(Vikki), Louise(Bill), and Ellen and their families.
John was proud of his service to his country. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and earned a JD from Western New England College School of Law. He served as an infantry officer in Vietnam in the Army’s 5th Battalion/7th Cavalry “Garry Owen” where he was awarded the Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal with V Device and Oak Leaf Cluster. In addition to infantry assignments, John’s military career included Aviation Rotary Wing Command, Massachusetts Army National Guard while attending law school, return to active duty at Cal Poly SLO/ROTC instructor, The National Guard Bureau, Distinguished Graduate/ Gen. John J Pershing award at Command and General Staff College, Army War College/Fellowship at Tufts University’s Fletcher School, at the Pentagon as Congressional Liaison, and finally serving on the Joint Staff before retiring. He received the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and other awards and badges and was particularly proud that he was placed on the Massachusetts Army National Guard Honorary Retired List as a Brigadier General.
After retirement John practiced as an attorney in Fairfax County and worked as an instructor at the Army Force Management School at Ft. Belvoir, VA. He enjoyed his volunteer work with an Ethics program mentoring future officers at West Point, and participated as an active member of the Critical Issues Round Table here in Northern Virginia, who recently commended his contributions and devotion to duty.
John was as much a best friend to all dogs as they were to him, and was particularly fond of his collies: Duke, Duchess, California Dreamer(seriously), Sierra, and Brannagh. John was an avid reader of history and was a devoted sports fan. He overflowed with kindness; broccoli was the only thing he ever hated. To him, a chocolate bar and peanut butter were better than gold.
A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 1:00 pm at St. Mary of Sorrows Historic Church with burial at Arlington National Cemetery October 22, 2019 at 3:00 pm.
