Message:
Marlene Roberta Shafer, 62, of New
Windsor, died on Saturday, February 13, 2010 in Newburgh of cancer. She was born
in Newburgh in 1947, the oldest child of Celia and Philip Shafer. Marlene was a
dedicated teacher and a devoted friend who loved her family, loved to travel and
from an early age, loved the New York Yankees. She grew up in Newburgh and
graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. Marlene went on to attend Orange County
Community College in Middletown and received her Bachelor's in Secondary English
from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1969. Marlene taught 7th and 8th grade English at
Meadow Hill School and late at South Junior High School, before attaining her
ultimate goal of teaching English at her alma mater, NFA. In her 30+ years of
teaching, she had an impact on hundreds of students' lives and was memorable for
her wit, her take-no-nonsense attitude and the personal interest she took in
each of her students. Marlene was known for many things: for her devotion to the
Yankees, for her loyalty to her extensive network of friends and colleagues, for
her pragmatic, but generous nature, for her worship of the sun. Marlene loved to
travel and though she enjoyed all her trips to Sweden, Cancun, Venezuela, San
Francisco, Florida, it would be Italy that called her the most. She made three
excursions there, exploring the countryside from Pompeii and Capri in the south
to Florence and Venice in the north. Marlene is survived by her siblings: Thomas
Shafer of Middletown, Roslyn Shafer of Otego, and Irene Shafer of Fishkill, as
well as cousins: Carole Wald of New Windsor and Carole's children, Erik Stams
and his wife, Rhian and their two children, Gwen and Nia and Jaime Stams and his
wife, Juliet and their two children, Jaxon and Jared. Services will be held at
the Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home, Inc., 318 N. Montgomery St., Newburgh on
Tuesday, February 16, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery in
the Town of Newburgh. Immediately after, friends and family will be received at
Marlene's home at 1057 Washington Green in New Windsor. In lieu of flowers, the
family is suggesting donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for the Cure (877)
465-6636 or the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, 800 Stony Brook Ct., Newburgh,
NY 12550.
