Joseph Leo Francis Smallwood - Class of 1951

  Joseph Leo Francis "Mouse" Smallwood, of Walden, entered into rest on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at home. He was 74. Son of the late Leo J. and Dorothy Mae Bowen Smallwood, he was born July 12, 1933 in Newburgh, NY. He married Janice Goodrich Smallwood in 1958, who survives at home. "He was a good man. He was brave and a good soldier; he never backed down. He will always be remembered as a great man and soldier, and will be forever missed and in everybody's heart." ...from your loving grandson, Brandon Zenick. Joseph graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. While serving he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired water plant operator at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was also a member of the American Legion. In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, Janice, he is survived by his loving children: Louise Smallwood of Marlboro, Joseph Smallwood, Jr. and his wife, Jean of Marlboro, and Debbie Smallwood-Zenick of Chester; brother, Richard Smallwood of Cornwall; sisters, Dorothy "Dottie Anne" Michael of Delaware, Molly Richter, Carol Michael, Donna Michael Pichel and Jeanette Brodt, all of Pennsylvania; grandchildren: Joseph III, Samantha and Katie Smallwood, all of Marlboro, Brandon and Matthew Zenick, both of Chester; great-granddaughter, Hailey Monroe of Marlboro; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., today, Sunday, March 30, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY. Cremation will follow at Cedar Hill Crematory. Burial of cremains will be private and at the convenience of the family in Goshen Veteran's Cemetery, Goshen. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph's memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Pack #41, PO Box 115, Chester, NY 10918.
