Mary ""Pat" Flemming Carruth, age 83, of Seneca Castle, NY, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Clifton Springs Hospital.Pat was born Jan. 21, 1923 in Newburgh, NY, the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Hunter Flemming. She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1940 and Syracuse University College of Home Economics in 1944. With a lifelong dedication to and love of teaching, Pat taught at the Tully Central School, adult education classes in Ithaca and Geneva, the Phelps Central School in the 1960's, and the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, until her retirement when she became a committed member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.Pat was the widow of A. Fenton Carruth, who died in 2000; they were married for more than 54 years. She was also predeceased by her beloved brother, Hunter.She is survived by her children, Bradford (Gail) Carruth of Ithaca, Gordon (Thea) Carruth of Colorado, Kim Carruth of North Carolina, Donna Carruth (Kathy Ray) of California, and Osima, a.k.a. Beverly Carruth (Gayl Bowser) of Oregon; as well as a daughter-in-law, Linda Beauregard of New Jersey; grandchildren, Erik (Cheryl) Carruth of Singapore, Amy Carruth of New Jersey, Erin (Tom) Carvelli of New Jersey, Dana (Shane O'Connor) Carruth of Ithaca, Catherine Carruth of Brooklyn, and Mariah and Emma Carray of California; and one great-grandchild, Katie-Anne Carruth of New Jersey.Pat was an active and long-term member of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva where she started and led the Self-Help Sewing Program every Wednesday for 25 years. She was a much-loved Seneca Castle community member. Her family thanks the townspeople of Seneca Castle for their concern and generous kindness to Pat, especially in the years following her husband's death; that helped her to remain in her own home of over fifty years until her death. Her family also wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Rev. James Gerling and Dr. J. Richard Tyner, as well as the nurses and Emergency Department staff of the Clifton Springs Hospital, for their caring and immediate response to Pat's needs.Burial will be in Whitney Cemetery, Town of Seneca and a Memorial Service will be held at The Presbyterian Church in Geneva, 24 Park Place at two o'clock on Sunday, October 1st.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Pat's memory to The Memorial Fund of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva, 24 Park Place, Geneva, NY 14456.
