Laura S. Harrison, loving Mother, Grandmother & Great-Grandmother, died Thursday, August 3, 2006 at Wingate at St. Francis in Beacon at the age of 88, after a long illness. Born to the late Robert L. and Elizabeth Pine Smith on January 6, 1918 in Newburgh, N.Y. Laura graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, attended nursing school and worked at Highland Hospital in Beacon as an LPN for many years. This is where she met her future husband, William H. Harrison Jr., and, on March 9, 1943, they were married in Good Shepherd Church in Newburgh. They moved to Glenham, N.Y., where they spent more than 60 years together until William died on June 18, 2003. She left nursing to raise her two children, but returned to it later as a nurse's aide at the then new Highland Hospital in Beacon where she worked until her retirement. Laura is survived by a son, William H. Harrison III & wife, Donna, of Glenham, N.Y.; and a daughter, Beverly Howell of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She is also survived by four beloved grandchildren, Janine Wheeler and husband, William, Jonathan Kormondy and wife, Laura, Scott Harrison and wife, Kathleen and Tanya Harrison and companion, James Dowd. Laura leaves four precious great-grandchildren, Tyra Lee, Mia Dowd, Rowan Kormondy and Ella Bleu Kormondy. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Edith VanBuren and brother-in-law, Gerald Adams, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, William, Laura was predeceased by three sisters, Annetta Livingston, Mildred Smith and Ruth Decker and one brother, Walter Smith. To all who knew and loved her, they will remember her caring nature, her ever-present warm smile and her capacity to remain positive, no matter what may happen. She loved music and was known to break out in song even throughout her illness. Laura was happiest when surrounded by her family, friends and her beloved Boston Terrier, "Bootsie". She will be truly missed by all. "Inner sunshine not only warms the heart of the owner, but all who come in contact with it." Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 6 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St., Fishkill. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Edwin Cromey officiating. Burial will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice, Inc., 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 in Laura's memory. Published in Times Herald-Record on Aug. 5, 2006
