Fred (Butch) Whitaker was a lifelong friend that spawned its beginnings in the backyard sandbox at the age of 4. We lived next door and went all through school together. We loved muscle cars, stock car races, hunted in Phoenicia, NY, and playing cards often. Joking and light humor, with laughter was always going on. After high school, we went our separate ways in life but always kept in touch. Butch was a butcher at Lloyds for several years and went to The Grand Union markets. There, at work, he had a stroke at the age of 47 that he never recovered from. He loved the woods and especially at Tupper Lake, N.Y. where he had a small house. Hunting and fishing were a love of his too. He never returned home after the stroke and spent the remainder of his days in institutional nursing care. I'd visit him wherever I was back into the area. He still had his old memory and we would reminisce about our childhood and old times. That did make him happy. It was a heartbreak to see him in that state. He had exceptionally excellent care at the home in Peekskill where he spends his remaining days/years. Butch has 2 sons. His sister; Lois Jean Affuso, was his guardian throughout his confinement that ensured he had the very best care and comfort possible for 23 years + that he required it. - I do miss him so.
