Mary Hassler of Cornwall-On-Hudson, a retired secretary/bookkeeper for the Town of Cornwall Supervisor's Office, and former Deputy Town Clerk of Cornwall, died Wednesday June 8, 2005 at her residence. She was 92. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on August 30, 1912 to Charlotte Houston and John W. Anderson, Mary moved with her family to Newburgh at the age of six, where her father was a building/contractor. She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and the Spencerian Business School. On April 16, 1920, she married Joseph F. Hassler of West Point and Cornwall-On-Hudson, and took up residence for a short time in Newburgh before moving to Cornwall-On-Hudson, where she spent the rest of her life. She was widowed on February 19, 1976. Mary was an avid traveler and traveled the world extensively with her late husband; son, Roger; and friends, enjoying treks throughout the world and enjoyed fun-filled family reunions with cousins in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Mary was an active member of the Powelton Club Thursday Bridge Group and other area Bridge groups; the Cornwall-On-Hudson Parent-Teacher's Association; Brownie, Girl Scout and Cub Scout Troops in Cornwall-On-Hudson; and had an avid interest in sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and baking. She was a member of the former Our Lady of Hope Center, the Oblate Fathers of Balmville. Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, Roger Joseph Hassler of Cornwall-On-Hudson, who, for many years, was her sole and loving caregiver; a daughter, Joanne Wilcox of the Town of Newburgh; a sister, Charlotte Weyant Kupin of New Paltz; granddaughters: Mary Smith of New Windsor, and Susan Haupt of Cranford, N.J.; loving grandson, Gregory J. Wilcox of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-grandchildren; as well as cousins in Lincolnshire, England; Agen, France; Armagh, Northern Ireland; and Edinburgh, Scotland. The Hassler Family will receive friends at St. Mary's Church, 180 South St., Newburgh, N.Y. on Monday June 13, 2005 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, at which time Father William A. Scafidi will offer a Funeral Mass. Internment will immediately follow the Mass in St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery in Cornwall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cornwall Ambulance Corps; St. Mary's Church; or the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements were made by the James F. Lulves Funeral Home, Inc. Published in Times Herald-Record on June 12, 2005
