Edwin Augustus Jones - Class of 1940

  Edwin Augustus Jones of Newburgh, passed away this Sunday, September 10, 2006, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residences in Newburgh, N.Y. He was 85. He was born in New York, N.Y. on August 17, 1921 into the union of the late Issac Jones and Fannie Jordan-Jones. A retired truck driver, Mr. Jones was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He attended Newburgh Free Academy until 1940 when he enlisted. A member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Newburgh for 50 years, he served the church in the Men's Choir for 30 years; the Usher's Ministry, and the Echo Choral Ensemble. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Jones at home; one daughter, Antoinette Jones of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Eugene Wilkins and his wife, Lucille, of Newburgh; three sisters: Madeline Wheeler of Newburgh, Ida Green of New Windsor and Pauline Dillard and her husband, Curlie W., of Newburgh; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Jackson and her husband, Samuel, of the Bronx, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Rudolph Jones, and a sister, Thelma Johnson. Visitation will be Friday, September 15, 2006 from 9-11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 76 First St., Newburgh. Services will be at the church on Friday, September 15, at 11 a.m. The Rev. George H. Smith will officiate. Entombment will be in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Middlehope. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice Residences, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550. Arrangements were made by Brutus W. Hodge Funeral Home, 13 Chambers St., Newburgh.
