Helen Wohltman Knowlden, resident of Heartland Health Care Center in Fort Myers, FL, died May 17, 2008. She was born July 4, 1911 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Helen and George Wohltman. Her ancestry is a proud one as a descendant of the Mayflower Hopkins family. Her father was known for his invention of the automobile signal light approved throughout the industry. Mrs. Knowlden spent her formative years in Newburgh, NY graduating with honors from Newburgh Free Academy and earning a scholarship and graduating from New Paltz State University. In August 1940 she married Richard B. Knowlden of Newburgh, and together shared a treasured life for 60 years. Following WWII they and their two children moved to Fishkill, NY where she became an elementary school teacher, living there until 1977 before their move to Fort Myers. Together they traveled in the USA, Europe and the Caribbean. Helen was a grand dame in every way giving inspiration, understanding and example to her family and all the thousands of students she taught. Even in her final years she brought smiles and laughter to all those who came to know her at Heartland. She displayed a lively sense of humor and feisty spirit that will live long in her family's heart. She is survived by her daughter Andrea Knowlden Rowe and son-in-law Thomas, of Durham, NC and England; her grandson Matthew Rowe, her son Richard B. Knowlden, Jr. and daughter-in-law Margaret of Farmingville, NY and their children Jessica Knowlden-Tucker and Chris Knowlden. Our sadness in her passing is tempered with the knowledge that she will be reunited with her dear husband. A memorial service will be held in June at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hope Hospice in Fort Myers in Helen Knowlden's name. - Published in The News-Press on May 22, 2008 Replies to this post
