Joan I. Terwilliger Kucyk, of Crofton, MD and Gibsonia, PA, passed away on October 26, 2018 after a brief hospital stay. Joan was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis 15 years ago, which until recently, had remained largely dormant. After falling and breaking her hip in July of this year, Joan was recovering well after partial hip replacement surgery. More recently, Joan began to struggle with her breathing, which was the cause of her admission to the hospital on October 19, 2018. She would unfortunately remain there until her death. Joan was the beloved wife of the late Peter M. Kucyk who passed away in 2009. They were happily married for 55 years and raised five children. Joan was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She was born in Frankfort, NY on February 17, 1932 to Nial Terwilliger and Marguerite (Tilford) Terwilliger and had one sister (Bernice) who preceded her in death. At a young age, the family moved to Newburgh, NY where Joan was raised. Upon graduating from high school at Newburgh Free Academy, in 1949, Joan went to work at New York Telephone Company. She was a phone operator until she married Peter on October 24, 1954. The family settled in Maryland in 1960, where they raised their five children. Joan loved being a mother and nothing was more important to her than her family. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother and a trusted friend. She enjoyed spending time crocheting and reading mysteries. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and will remain in our hearts and minds forever. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Peter and their oldest daughter, Nancy Ralbovsky. She is survived by their daughter, Elizabeth (Kevin) Hunt and son David (Larissa), 11 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A Memorial service will be held at the United States Naval Academy (Main Chapel) on November 15, 2018 at 10AM. (Please enter by Gate 8) Interment immediately following at the USNA Columbarium.
