Alfred J. "Fred" Moresco - Class of 1942

Alfred J. "Fred" Moresco, an 81-year resident of Newburgh, entered into eternal
rest on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh. Son
of the late Domenick and Angelina Moresco, he was born on August 23, 1924, one
of 10 children. He was married to and survived by his wife Carmelina Vinciquerro
Moresco. They were high school sweethearts and were devoted to each other
throughout their 59 years of marriage. Fred was a well-known and highly
respected person in the City of Newburgh. He entered the U.S. Navy on December
24, 1942. While serving, he earned the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Medal,
Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He volunteered to serve even before he
finished High School. He served his country in time of war and then returned
home to receive his High School diploma under the N.Y. State operation
Recognition Program on Friday, November 8, 2002 in N.F.A's auditorium. Fred
attended teacher's training courses at Vanderneer Tennis University in Hilton
Head, S.C. He then went on to Killington Pro Tennis School in Vermont, whose
director was Ken Ewan. Fred's childhood was spent growing up on Newburgh's
Washington St. across from the Recreation Park. He was a faithful parishioner of
Sacred Heart Church his entire life. He loved flowers and used his talent to
enhance the beauty of the church grounds. He volunteered at Sacred Heart School
with Father Leo's suggestion, to begin their physical education program. He then
went on to start similar programs at St. Francis, St. Joseph's, St. Patrick's
and St. Thomas's in Cornwall. He was appointed to the Newburgh Fire Dept. on
January 15, 1953. He served the community well in the West End of Newburgh. He
retired on May 11, 1973. He was the director of tennis at the Powelton Club for
six years. He also was the Operator and Director of the Storm King Tennis
Program. Flowers were his passion and he could be seen planting in the hot sun
at the Coloni Funeral Home. He kept their grounds a showplace. Many were
comforted by them as they made their way to the home to pray for their dead. He
was a 41-year member of the YMCA. He began working there at the early age of 11
until he could afford to pay for his membership. He was a man of great
determination and always worked hard to achieve his goals. Fred's
accomplishments and involvements were many. He was president of Masterson Lake
Park, president of the Pastime Athletic Club for four years, president of the
Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame, president of the Softball Club which he
entered in 1993. He played on the High School Varsity baseball team for four
years and also the Junior Varsity football team. The Newburgh Recreation
Commissioner presented him a Certificate of Appreciation on June 22, 1993 for
his work and dedication to the City of Newburgh. The Holy Name Society of Sacred
Heart Church named him "Man of the Year" on Sunday, March 30, 2003. Fred was a
regular with the Newburgh Hummingbirds in the North Atlantic Professional
Baseball League. A resolution was made on July 12, 1993, naming baseball diamond
#1 in the Recreation Park in Fred's honor. This was to thank him for his
exemplary community service as a member of the City of Newburgh Parks and
Recreation Commission Board. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by
his son, Alfred J. "Fred" Moresco Jr. of Naples, Florida; granddaughter, Casey
Erin Moresco; sister, Fanny Murature, and his devoted brother Vincent Moresco.
He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three
sisters, JoMarie Moresco Lennon, Mary Cubito and Rose Damiano; four brothers,
George "Toppy", Adolph "Dot", Harry "Mushy" and Samuel "Sammy" Moresco.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, July 28 at Brooks-DiDonato
Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh. The City of Newburgh Fire Dept. with
have a Firematic Service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 29 at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh.
Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
