Frederick J. Barbero Sr., 87, of Williams, Ore., formerly of Newburgh, died on November 27, 2001 at Three Rivers Hospital in Williams, Ore. Born January 13, 1914 in New York City, he was the son of the late James Barbero and Pierina Marcellino Barbero of Newburgh and the husband, of Audrey Davis Barbero to whom he had been married for 55 years.Barbero retired from the US Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer after 23 year of active service, mostly in submarines. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corp. Medal for his Actions in successfully fighting a serious electrical fire on the Submarine, USS S-35 while in enemy waters during a severe Pacific storm in the Aleutians just before Christmas of 1942. As the Chief Electrical Officer on Board, he repeatedly entered smoke filled compartments to fight the fires and to make the necessary repairs which enabled the Submarine and its crew to return to Port. After his retirement from the Navy, he moved his family from Long Beach, Calif. to Grants Pass, Ore., where he became a home Builder and an Electrical Consultant. He was an avid Fisherman and loved the outdoors. After full retirement, he enjoyed repairing small appliances which he donated to the poor.He is survived by his son, Frederick J. Barbero Jr. of Williams, Oreg.; a daughter, Claudia De Roos of Kimberly, Oreg.; a brother, John J. Barbero of Newburgh; three sisters, Margaret Filiberti of Middlehope, Gloria Crisci of Newburgh and Rita Boyd of Sacramento, Calif; five grandchildren; and great-grandchildren along with numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lea Pease; a sister, Ida Terracino; and two brothers, Harold Barbero and J. Joseph Barbero.He was cremated and his ashes are being transported to the South Pacific where they will be taken aboard a US Navy ship and distributed over the waters of the Pacific where many of his shipmates from the submarine service are resting."
