John Peter Vandermark - Class of 1948

  John Peter Vandermark passed away on March 17, 2021, peacefully at the age of 91 years after a long full life. John was a lifelong resident of Cornwall and Newburgh. He was a proud member of Ironworkers Local 417 and remained in the union for over 66 years having worked as a foreman on signature bridge, building and power plant projects in the Hudson Valley and beyond, taking great pride in his craft. He also enjoyed spending summers at his beloved cabin in Smallwood with his extended family, travelling on vacations in Mexico and Florida to name a few. Besides his parents John and Elizabeth Vandermark (Purtell), John is preceded in death by his beloved son John Vandermark Jr, his sisters Elizabeth Stoddard, Helen O'Shea, several nieces and nephews. John is survived by his devoted wife Donna Vandermark, his daughters Jacquelyn Vandermark (Eric Stewart) of Chester, NY and Eileen (Mark) Fritz of Putnam Valley, NY and son Thomas (Cheryl) Vandermark of Wallkill, NY. John took great pride in his many wonderful grandchildren, Carter and Evan Stewart, Rachael, Tyler, Justine, and Bryson Fritz of Putnam Valley NY, John Vandermark of Vestal, NY and Kyle Vandermark of Bergenfield, NJ. John is also survived by his sister Regina Zamenick of Petersburg, VA and several nieces and nephews. John was a member of the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and proudly served his country as member of US Army 2ND Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was happiest in the company of family and his many friends who will always cherish the memories of Ironworkers stories, Bocci games or simply having a cocktail and enjoying a beautiful day. In the summer he enjoyed spending time doing home improvements, planting/ gardening, BBQ's and enjoying family and friends at his cabin upstate, with his faithful dog Henry never far from his side. Memorial visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. Monday March 22 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh. A service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday March 23 at 11 am with burial following at Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor, NY.
