Robert Gillespie - Class of 1965

          Robert L. Gillespie, Jr., of Wallkill, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. He was 74. Son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Ethal (Morley) Gillespie, he was born January 11, 1947 in Newburgh, NY. Robert or “Backhoe Bob” as he was known by family and friends, was the retired owner/operator of Apple Valley Excavating, Wallkill, NY. He proudly served his country as a US Marine. He was a member of the NRA, Robert, who had a strong work ethic, operated several successful businesses throughout his life. He loved to garden and was a NASCAR fan. One of his favorite things to do was to watch his grandson Colten race. Survivors include two sons, Robert L. Gillespie, III and his wife Tina Manginelli of Wallkill and Scott Gillespie and his wife Cindy of Syracuse, NY; four grandchildren, Tana, Marlee, Ryan and Colten; and two great grandchildren, Hamilton and Theodore. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Constance “Connie” (Billings) Gillespie, and two brothers, William and Gary A. Gillespie. Private cremation has taken place at Cedar Hill Crematory. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY. Military Honors will be conducted at 7:00 pm. Contributions in Robert’s name can be made either to Wounded Warriors Project at www.woundedwarriorsproject.org , or Plattekill Fire Department, 50 Firehouse Road, Plattekill, NY 12568.

In 1965 seven guys from Newburgh, Bobby and I included, joined the Marines.....  After completing his tour he got married and started an excavation business in the Newburgh area... His wife Connie died a few years back... May Bobby RIP ....... Semper Fi


Bobby visited his good friend Don Duff in NC a few years back.
