of Newburgh, NY...."Remember, by the time I sat at the kitchen table there were already seven other people enjoying a meal!" Mom or Nanny or "Old Nanny" or Aunt Gen or Genevieve - no matter what you called her, would respond with that phrase when asked about what most influenced her long and optimistic life. Who were those seven people in a crowded house on 17th Street in Brooklyn In 1925? It was her parents, Elvira Mazzatenda and Charles Frank DeVito and older siblings, brothers Francie and Albert, sisters Eleanor, Mildred and Gloria. Two more siblings -Evelyn and Charlie - would join the family over the next five years. Firstborn infant Modestino passed away before anyone else was even born. With the Crash of 1929, the family moved full time to their "summer house in the country" - an 11 acre farm in Middle Hope, part of which later became MAMA DeVITO's ITALIAN KITCHEN. This influx of eight children made the local school districts amend their borders so Balmville School is where she started her education, followed by Newburgh Free Academy, where she met the love of her life J. Leo Glynn when he was her fellow student and math tutor. While Leo served in the Navy during the second World War, she studied to become an X-ray technician at New York Hospital, a profession she continued into her early 70s. She loved to recall her adventures in New York City, especially the time she "lost" a full set of Frank Sinatra's teeth ! Genevieve exemplified a life filled with love and concern for all around her. With boundless energy she dedicated herself to caring for others, and was truly devoted to her family, both immediate and extended. In retirement, she devoted more time to bridge, gardening, fiber arts and volunteering as Orange County American Legion Auxiliary Girls State coordinator and Board Trustee for Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh, even delivering meals herself well into her 80s ! She is survived by 2 older sisters, Eleanor Owen (100) and Mildred Starin (98) with whom she chatted daily! Left to miss the twinkle in her eyes, her heart of gold and endless words of wisdom are Jimmy and Jeri Glynn and their daughters and their families - Peggy, J and JB Hosking, Laura, Brad, Grant and Drew Smith and Rachel, Jason, Avery and Clara Arnott together with Kathy and Alan Guarino and their family Allegra, Molly and Josephine Guarino and Christofer Guarino. As well as dozens of nieces and nephews and dear friends and neighbors, her "dream team", Carla, Catherine, Louise and Rose, enriched mom's life in so many ways when severe macular degeneration robbed her of her eyesight. Mom celebrated each day with her beloved 4 legged companion Sheba at her side. A quiet service was held this week at St. Mary's Cemetery in Marlboro under the gentle guidance of Deacon Vincent Porcelli. In the summer of 2022 friends and family will gather in the sunshine to honor her life, sharing laughter and memories, recipes and favorite foods, and to plant flowers and trees in her enduring memory. Special thanks are extended to all who shared her life, cared for her, and delighted in life in her beloved Hudson River Valley. In lieu of flowers, her friends are encouraged to donate in her memory to the MEALS ON WHEELS OF GREATER NEWBURGH, 35 Cerone Pl., Newburgh, NY 12550.
