Joseph Anthony Favino of Naples, FL - Formerly of Newburgh, NY passed away on November 14, 2021,after a lengthy illness with his loving family by his side. He was 95 years old. Joe was born in Newburgh, New York on January 19, 1926 to Carmela Meola and Patrick Favino. There he attended local schools, surviving rheumatic fever which kept him home in bed for a year. He recovered and continued his education becoming a marksman on his high school shooting team. Upon graduation, he made the first of two momentous decisions in his lifetime: he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to fight the burgeoning threat of World War II. He was 17 years old. The Navy saw Joe's potential and sent him to Brown University in recognition, and then to OCS at Notre Dame. He received his commission at age 19. During his service, among other duties, he served as gunnery officer on the aircraft carriers Boxer and Essex in the Pacific Theater. Upon separation from the Navy, he earned an Engineering degree from Brown University with the help of the newly created GI Bill. While at Brown, Joe met Anne McDermott, a student at Pembroke, and this led to the second momentous decision in his lifetime: he proposed to her. She was the love of his life and his true soulmate. They married in 1950 and settled in Newburgh while Joe began to grow the small plumbing and heating business his father had established, expanding it into Favino Mechanical Construction, one of the largestā€”and most highly regardedā€”HVAC contractors in the Hudson River Valley, employing as many as 150 union employees at any given time, as well as office and warehouse personnel. He was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of the Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters Local 269, and participated in many collective bargaining negotiations leading to agreements fair to both management and union members. For over 30 years, he was an active and influential member of the Town of Newburgh Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as the Zoning Board of Appeals. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of Highland National Bank and remained on the Board when it was later acquired first by Norstar Bank and then by Fleet Bank. His enjoyment of fishing lead him to Alexandria Bay every June for decades, and to teaching his three grandsons the pleasure of the sport in the mangrove islands of Southwest Florida. To say Joe was an avid golfer would be an understatement; he loved the game and took every opportunity to play at the Powelton Club in Newburgh, at Eagle Creek Country Club in Naples, and at many other golf courses around the country. During his lifetime, he enjoyed an enviable 5 (five!) holes-in-one, the last two at Eagle Creek, at age 76 and age 84. He also actively served on numerous committees and boards at both Eagle Creek and the Powelton Club. Joe is predeceased by his parents, his loving wife of nearly 65 years Anne, and his half-sister, Frances Favino Lease. He is survived by his five children: Ellen Ahearn, Catherine (Michael Balogh), Martin (Lisa), Thomas (Nora) and Joseph; three grandchildren: Brian Ahearn, Jr. (Jennifer), Timothy Ahearn, and Daniel Gaetano (Ashly); and two great-grandchildren: Julia Ahearn and Brian Ahearn. He is also survived by half-sister Patricia Favino Cassaerta. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Isabel Rosa, his aide and companion for the last three-plus years. The family is grateful for and appreciative of his nephew John T. McDermott, Jr. for his loving assistance in caring for Joe. And, of course, the family will be eternally grateful to his daughter Catherine, who served as his loving primary care giver over the past four years. The family will receive friends at Eagle Creek on December 18th in celebration of Joe's life. A celebration of life will also be held in Newburgh on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests contributions to First Tee Naples/Collier ( https://firstteenaplescollier.org/ ) or Metropolitn Golf Association Foundation Youth on Course ( www.mgagolf.org/foundation ) in Joe's name. - January 19, 1926 - November 14, 2021
