Salvatore Joseph Aulogia Sr. (Sal), 93 years, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 5, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Salvatore was born on August 26, 1928, a son of an Italian immigrant. He was a lifelong resident of Newburgh, a community he cherished. He was predeceased by his parents, Salvatore Pompadoro and Catherine (Oliva) Aulogia, his brothers Ace Acilli, Dominic and Louis Aulogia, and Mary (Aulogia) Hollenbeck, and his sister-in-law Sister Anna Veronica Oncia, and Florence (Oncia) Aulogia, his wife of 56 years. Sal was a talented athlete, starting for the high school football team, which won the prestigious All Duso Award. He also starred on the Sacred Heart basketball team and played semi-pro baseball. Upon graduating from high school, Sal chose to work with his father in the family fish business. At various times, he worked with his brother Dominic and sister Mary. Over time, the business grew to include his son, Sal Jr., who he worked alongside for 45 years until they retired together this past November. Sal was drafted and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. He was stationed in Japan before suffering an injury and being honorably discharged. He returned to marry a local girl, the love of his life, Florence Oncia. They settled down on Mill Street and became lifelong residents of Newburgh, a community they loved and served. Together they raised a family of five children Sal (Cheryl) Aulogia, Ruth (James) Carr, Carla (Tony) Venti, Chrysa (Joseph) Kennedy, and Rose (John) Moore. The family grew to include eleven grandchildren: Candice, Victoria, and Salvatore III Aulogia, Jamie, Annie, Julie, Daniel, and Michael Carr, Kathryn Moore, and Luke and Jody Kennedy and six great-grandchildren: Colin, Dominic, Addison, Jaxson, Charlie, and Remy. Sal was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, a patron who also served on various committees. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend to many. He owned one of the only five original businesses in the city of Newburgh, "Sally's Fish Market", operating on South William Street for 87 years. He will forever be remembered for his kind demeanor, incredible work ethic, his loving and giving heart, and his thoughtful words of wisdom. - August 26, 1928 ~ December 5, 2021
