Daries Edward Monk Sr. - Class of 1971

    Daries Edward Monk, Sr., 70, passed away peacefully at his residence in Newton Grove, North Carolina. Born February 17, 1952, in Grantham, North Carolina to parents, John Edward Monk and Bessie Robinson Monk Stephens. He was the oldest of their ten children. Raised in Wilmington, Delaware where he attended primary schools... He then moved to Newburgh, New York where he graduated high school from Newburgh Free Academy in 1971, then on his professional career in Albany, NY. Daries worked in sales for over 30 years at several companies, including Luna Bakery, Wonder Bread, Entenmann's Bakery, Keebler and Coca-Cola before retirement in 1998. Daries, or as he was affectionally called 'Monk,' lived life to the fullest... In his youth, he enjoyed racing cars and motorcycles with his uncles & friends the "Soul Demons." He loved to play sports in high school including football and track & field. He also loved to watch sports, especially football, basketball, and horse racing. He enjoyed swimming in recent years, where he spent a lot of time in the pool. Monk will be most remembered for his outgoing personality, his kind nature and infectious laugh.Monk relocated back to North Carolina to care for his grandfather, John C. Robinson prior to his death in 2005. Daries was baptized by Bishop Charles Williams, Senior at White Oak Disciples of Christ Church in 1999. He was extremely active with White Oak as well as the Western Assembly Disciple of Christ Churches. He was a leader on the church kitchen committee, alongside his mother Bessie. They enjoyed cooking their famous recipes for the congregation at service & church events. Monk also loved joining in with the male chorus for songs & hymns. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, February 22,2022 at White Oak Disciples of Christ Church in Newton Grove. Family hour will be at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery Newton Grove. Daries is survived by his children, Letitia Wall (Krysten), Shontá Monk-Burt (Ramion), Daries Monk Jr. His surviving grandchildren are (YuQuan, Ashonte (Galal), Ramion Jr, and Nicholas). One great-grandson YuQuan Jr. He is survived by his siblings, Gwendolyn Clark (William), James Stephens, Patti Stephens McNair, Mark Stephens, David Monk, Jonelle Monk, and Jonathan Monk. He is also survived by uncles, Robert Robinson, Amos Robinson, Aunt Mildred Monk. Also left to remember him are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and special friend and companion Marie Cady. He was preceded in death by his parents, great-grandparents, uncles John Robinson and Herbert Johnson; aunts Barbara Robinson, Annette Robinson, Jeanette Robinson, Clara Bell Johnson, sister Renee Stephens, and brother Ronald Monk.
