Constance Mills Betts - Class of 1943

    Constance "Connie" Betts, 96 years old, of Wallkill, New Yorkentered into rest peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on April 19, 2022. The daughter of the late Fred and Blanche Mills, she was born January 7, 1926 in Stamford, NY. She married Kenneth W. Betts on April 22, 1945 in Oneonta, NY. Connie was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and SUNY New Paltz. She began her lifelong career as an elementary school teacher in Roseton School District and continued her career in the Newburgh School District. After retirement, she became a member of the Retired Newburgh Teachers Association where she enjoyed getting together with her colleagues. Much later after retirement she enjoyed teaching her 5 great-grandchildren at "Betts School". Connie was actively involved Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working in the Nearly New Shop and loved being part of the UMW. At the time of her death, she was both the oldest living member and also the longest serving member of the church. After retiring Connie enjoyed traveling the world with her best friend Terry Eitel. Connie is survived by her daughters Marian Betts Luis with whom she resided, Shirley Nordlund of Tucson, AZ, Son in law Kenneth DeGroat of Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren Derek and Suzanne DeGroat of Gardiner, NY, Denise and Gary Crawn of Wallkill, NY, Nancy Nordlund and her children and Connie (JC) Matthews and their children of Tucson, AZ; great-grandchildren Bryce, Kyle and Hailey DeGroat and Brett and Leah Crawn; her sister Thelma Mitchell, Newburgh NY, James W. Mills, Florham Park, NJ and sister-in-law Ruth Mills, Newburgh NY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Kenneth W. Betts, brothers Richard Mills and Robert Mills, her sister Joyce Snyder, and her sons Stephen R. Betts and John R. Betts. Visitation will be held on Thursday April 21, 2022 from 2pm-3:30pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 468 Broadway, Newburgh, NY. A funeral service will follow at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties. - January 7, 1926 - April 19, 2022
