Diane Whitaker Mendez - Class of 1974

    Diane E. Whitaker Mendez, of Newburgh, formerly of Staten Island, entered into rest on Sunday, August 21, 2022. She was 66. Daughter of Claire (Koller) Whitaker and the late Francis E. Whitaker, she was born April 18, 1956 in Newburgh, NY. A former Librarian with Dongan Hills Library in Staten Island she later worked for the Newburgh Free Library and as a greeter in the emergency room at St. Luke’s Hospital. Diane is survived by her mother Claire (Koller) Whitaker of Newburgh; a son, Jason F. (Kelli Matheson) Mendez of Middletown; two daughters, Laura A. (James Oetzel) Mendez and Michelle C. Mendez, both of the Town of Newburgh; four brothers, Fred (Elaine) Whitaker of Newburgh, Jerry (Karen) Whitaker of Mashpee, MA, Matthew (Susan) Whitaker of Arlington, VA, and Daniel Whitaker of Decatur, GA; a sister, Ellen Whitaker of Newburgh; a newborn grandchild, Raelynn and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her husband, John O. Mendez, Jr., in 2019. Private cremation has taken place at Cedar Hill Crematory. Memorial Visitation will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, August 29, 2022 at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY 12550. Burial will follow at the Orange County Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Goshen, NY. Those who knew Diane know how much she loved reading and books. Her children have collaborated with the Newburgh Armory Unity Center to collect donations in her memory to help support their children's library.
