Carl Ponesse - Class of 1955

Carl Albert Ponesse, affectionately known to his family and
friends as Butch, of New Windsor, passed away peacefully at
his home on Sunday, April 30th surrounded by his loving
family. He was 86.
Son of the late Thomas and Nancy (Alfano) Ponesse, he was
born in Newburgh. Carl was a graduate of Newburgh Free
Academy and Orange County Community College. He married his
beloved wife Joan H. Gnida Ponesse in April 1965, who
predeceased him in January 2020.
Carl served in the U.S. National Guard before entering a
career in sales working for three decades with Colony Liquor
in Kingston, N.Y. Carl and his wife were also successful
landlords for over thirty years while also venturing into
real estate. Both were highly industrious in many areas and
enjoyed traveling, playing cards, music, dancing, and
especially spending time with family members. In his later
years, he also enjoyed organizing a breakfast club with
friends and watching old horror films with his son and
brother on Svengoolie.
Carl is survived by his loving son Carl J. Ponesse and his
wife Jeannette Kennedy-Ponesse, his sister Frieda Formato
and his brother Robert Ponesse, all of New Windsor and 30
special nieces and nephews whom he cherished, most notably
Steven Ponesse of New Windsor and many loving friends.
He was predeceased by his sisters Thomasina and her husband
Frank Tangredi, Virginia and her husband Anthony Martini,
and Genevieve and her husband Bill Marotta; his brothers
Louis and his wife Linda and Thomas L. Jr. and his wife
Rose; his in-laws Anthony Formato and Margaret Ponesse,
MaryAnne and Frank Fabiano and nephews Thomas L. Ponesse and
Joseph Marotta.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3rd
at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY. A
mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on
Thursday, May 4th at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 145
Benkard Avenue, Newburgh, NY. Burial will follow in Calvary
Cemetery, New Windsor.
