Mary Jo Tompkins Barger - Class of 1952

    Mary Jo Barger of Montgomery, NY, a lifelong area resident passed away suddenly on January 1, 2024 with her loving daughter by her side at Garnet Health Medical Center. She was 89. The daughter of the late William Tompkins and Edith Audrey (Fowler) Tompkins, she was born October 5, 1934 in Cornwall, NY. Mary Jo was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and in her earlier years, she was employed at the New York Telephone Company in Newburgh, NY as a telephone operator. Some of Mary Jo's favorite things were visiting with family, crossword puzzles and reading a good mystery book. Mary Jo is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Harold Barger; loving and dedicated daughter, Cheryl Smiley of Monticello; loving son, David Barger of Kingston (Laurie); a cherished granddaughter, Krista Gonzalez (Eugene); and her two very dear great grandchildren, Adelynd and Xavier. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, her favorite cousin, Vernice "Neecy" Arnott and later in life, a special friend, Jane Martens. In addition to her parents, Mary Jo was predeceased by her brother, Richard Tompkins; sister, Ruth Ann Weiss; Sister-in-law, Thelma Barger. Per Mary Jo's wishes, there will be no funeral services.
