Shirley Craig Enkler - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a wonderful woman, Shirley Craig Enkler. Shirley passed away on her 99th birthday, Friday, January 5, 2024. She was still thriving in her home in Milton, with the help of her partner and companion, Dr. Leon Krakower. Shirley was born to Leslie and Nora Craig on January 5, 1925, in Newburgh. She was a member of West Point Officers Club, Moose Lodge #92 in Hyde Park and the Leisure Time Dancers at the Elks Lodge in Poughkeepsie. Shirley loved her career as a medical secretary. After a stint working for the Navy, she was employed at the Hudson River State Hospital. Her stories kept her family in giggles for hours. Following the facilities closure, she joined the staff at the office of Dr. Leon Krakower in Poughkeepsie. She managed his office, on and off, for many years. She was 88 when she decided to retire.
She is survived by her children: Donald L.Cosman (Marybeth), Michele Brown (Bill), Grandchildren: David Dawes (Kimberly), Kristina Brown, Ryan Brown, Donny Cosman and Great-Grandchildren: Logan and Lily Dawes. Along with her sister Virginia Noll and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her soul mate and husband, Lt. Colonel Vincent Enkler, USAF, retired. Her brother, James Craig, and sisters, Betty Craig and Madeline Libolt. Shirley lived in love stories and her final love story was with Dr. Leon Krakower. Shirley will always be remembered by her family for her quick wit, beautiful smile, and contagious laughter. Shirley danced until her heels fell off - well into her 90's. Her compassion towards animals was unrivaled. She always had a dog by her side, and she spent a lot of time at the Newburgh Animal Shelter. She is already missed.
Calling hours are Thursday, January 11th. Services will be held 10am-12pm, with her burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
