Lenore Smith, of New Windsor, beloved wife, mother and
grandmother, passed away on January 21, 2024. She was 84.
Daughter of the late Abe and Adeline Horowitz, she was born
on July 12,1939 in Bronx, NY. Lenore attended the Bronx High
School of Science and went on to obtain her Bachelor's
Degree in Education from Hunter College and continued on to
earn her Master's Degree. She began teaching at the early
age of 21 in the Bronx and when she and her husband, Ed,
moved to New Windsor, she began teaching in the Newburgh
School District. She spent most of her career teaching
social studies but her favorite years were at NFA teaching
AP American History. Her dedication to teaching was shown by
the success of her students. She loved her students and was
loved in return.
Lenore was a wonderful mother and would always say that
raising her two girls was the hardest job she had, but the
most rewarding work she ever had done. When her
grandchildren arrived, she spent much time with them,
enjoying watching them grow, having more time to spend with
them in her retirement.
Lenore was an avid reader and traveled with her father to
countries that she had taught about. She enjoyed boating
with her husband and was a member of the Newburgh Yacht Club
for many years. She was an avid Yankee fan who grew up right
next to Yankee Stadium. She was also a mother to many lucky
fur babies through the years. Her current cat, Misty, will
miss curling up with her in their red blanket.
Above all, Lenore loved, and enjoyed spending time with, her
family and her friends.
Lenore is survived by her husband of 62 years, Edward Smith,
daughter Barbara (Marc) Stolfe and grandchildren Adam and
Lauren Stolfe of Gardiner. In addition to her parents, she
is predeceased by her brother, Jeffrey Horowitz, and
daughter, Nancy Smith.
A
Celebration of Life, to which family and friends are
invited, will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 2 -4
pm at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY.
Donations can be made in Lenore's memory to St. Jude
Children's Hospital, www.stjude.org.
