Joseph Poptanich - Class of 1940

      Joseph "Joe" Poptanich, Sr., a former long-time resident of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on February 11, 2024 at Montgomery Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Montgomery, NY. He was 101 years old. The son of the late Stephen Poptanich and Stella (Kuban) Poptanich, Joseph was born on November 22, 1922 in Newburgh, NY. Joe was a retired Printer at the USMA Print Shop in West Point, NY for many years. He honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. Joe was a former Member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Cornwall. Joe's big heart was matched by his love of life and the people in it. He embraced his creativity and delighted in sharing it: Ukrainian eggs, pirogis, cookies, decorated cakes, yearly gingerbread houses and later in life, paintings. He was generous sharing his love and humor. We were fortunate in having him in our lives, he leaves us with a wealth of loving memories. Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife: Mildred J. (Thayer) Poptanich in 2004. He is survived by his devoted sons: Robin R. Poptanich and his wife Judith of Middletown, NY and Joeph Poptanich, Jr. of Roscoe, NY; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Joseph was predeceased by his sons: Perry S. Poptanich and Peter W. Poptanich; as well as his daughter-in-law: Patricia Poptanich. - November 22, 1922 - February 11, 2024
          Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 17th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Graveside Service will follow the Visitation at Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor, NY at 12:00 p.m. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
