Albert A. Ciaccio, age 95, (formerly of Newburgh, NY; Hyde
Park, NY; and Hobe Sound, FL) passed away peacefully at his
daughter's home in Union Vale surrounded by family. He
entered into eternal life on February 11, 2024. Albert (Al)
was born in Newburgh, NY on Sept.13, 1928 to Agostino and
Mary (D'Agostino) Ciaccio. He graduated high school from
Newburgh Free Academy in 1946. He attended and graduated
from Rider College in NJ with a degree in accounting. He
proudly served his country in the Korean War as a member of
the US Army from 1951 through 1952. Al met his future wife,
Katherine (Kay) Schuyler, in 1954 at Rhoda Arms, a local
nightclub in Newburgh, NY, when he was introduced to her by
a common friend. Al knew at once she was the girl he was
going to marry - when he told his friends they couldn't
believe it! Al married Kay at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church, Newburgh, NY, on April 24, 1955. Al began work in
construction and helped build the NYS Thruway as a mason.
With his accounting background, he secured a job with the US
Treasury Department for the Internal Revenue Service at
their Newburgh office and was then transferred to their
Poughkeepsie office. Al and Kay moved from Newburgh to Hyde
Park in 1961 with two young children in tow. After his
retirement in 1986 and many winters of snow, in 1994 they
decided to retire to the Eaglewood Community in Hobe Sound,
Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather, golf and wood
carving. From a young age, Al was a talented artist. From
music to drawing, painting to woodworking, he eventually
focused his talents on wood carving, which became his
life-long passion. On his own and with members of the Hudson
Valley Woodcarvers, (where he was past president), he
created numerous carvings including famous figures, animals,
birds, and as a project with the Hudson Valley Woodcarvers,
a carousel horse with carved decorative panels for the New
York State Carousel project. What he loved most of all in
life was his wife, Kay, and his children, grandchildren and
great grandchild. Al was outgoing, funny, charming and
witty. He was a man who got involved in his community. He
was considered 'the mayor' at his Florida retirement
community because everyone knew him. He was always very
generous with his time, energy and expertise - if something
needed to be fixed, Al would gladly volunteer to help. He is
survived by his daughter Kathy Welsh and son-in-law John of
Union Vale, NY, and his son Prof. James Ciaccio and
daughter-in-law Prof. Yu-Shin Ding of Manhattan, NY. He is
also survived by grandchildren Andrea Casey and her husband
Robert Casey of Union Vale, NY; Tom Welsh of Alpha, NJ and
great grandson John Welsh; sister Marie Petro of Hobe Sound,
FL,; and sister-in-law Rosemarie Ciaccio of PA; and many
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Katherine
Ciaccio, his parents, sisters Florence D'Amico and Lola
Brune, and brother Rudy Ciaccio.
