William E McLean III, commonly known as Bill to family,
friends, and co-workers, passed away peacefully at home on
May 5th 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived
by his loving wife Dawn, his son Kyle, his daughter Jenna,
his twin brother Brian McLean and wife Jill of Myrtle Beach
SC, his brother Kevin McLean of Myrtle Beach SC, his sister
Kelly McLean of Newburgh NY, his parents William And Gayle
McLean of Murrells Inlet, SC, his in laws Armond and Shiela
Dipaolo of Montgomery NY, his best friend Brian Quinn of
Montgomery NY, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and
nephews, and countless close friends.
Bill attended St Francis catholic school and graduated from
Newburgh Free Academy.
Bill was hired as a deputy sheriff by the Orange County
Sheriff's Office in May 1990. He worked there until February
1991 when he was hired as a Police Officer for the Town of
Newburgh Police Department. Bill graduated from the Rockland
County Police Academy in June 1991.
Bill met his loving wife Dawn in April 1994 and they were
later married in May of 1999. Together they designed and
built a beautiful home in Montgomery where they raised their
2 loving children. The family believed that the best things
to hold on to in life were each other, and they lived by
that motto.
During Bill's 26 years of service with TNPD, he served as a
Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT operator, SWAT
team leader, Police motorcycle officer, Police Motorcycle
Instructor, and Patrol Sergeant. Bill always said his
greatest career achievements were becoming a motor
instructor where he trained many students throughout NY and
NJ, and as a Patrol Sergeant where he supervised a squad of
officers. Bill's coworkers described him as a great
instructor, a great leader, and the best back a cop could
have. You knew you were in good hands when Bill arrived on
scene. A tough cop with a big heart.
Bill had a love of fast toys in his personal life. His
favorite toys were his 3 Corvettes. He also enjoyed jet
skiing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and ATVing with many
close friends.
In April 2016, Bill was diagnosed with stage IV colon
cancer. It was determined he contracted the disease from his
time as a SWAT operator while assisting in the recovery
efforts at 9/11 WTC Ground Zero. Bill continued to work for
a short time after his diagnosis but was forced into
retirement by an aggressive chemotherapy schedule.
Bill continued to fight his disease for 8 years, receiving
over 100 rounds of chemotherapy treatment in that time.
Although chemotherapy treatments left him feeling quite ill
most of the time, he still managed to enjoy life to the
fullest. In awe of his friends many times Bill would ride a
jet ski or snowmobile wearing a chemo pump. It was a
testament to his will to live and his zest for life. He
repeatedly said he would never quit fighting live his life
to the fullest. He lived up to his words… - March 6, 1968 -
