Peter
F Calvano, 79, a proud United States Marine Corps and Vietnam Veteran, entered
eternal peace on May 18, 2024 after fighting a long battle with cancer. Born in
Scalea, Italy, he was the oldest of eight children, and came to the United
States at the age of 8 years old. Upon graduating from Newburgh Free Academy he
enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam and when he
returned entered into the USMC Reserves and received an Associates Degree in
Applied Science from Orange County Community College. Pete loved sports. He was
a great baseball player, a pro bowler and avid golfer. His bowling career
started while he was in the USMC and was awarded top U.S Marine bowler while
stationed in California. He was a certified bowling instructor. He was inducted
into the Newburgh Bowling Associate Hall of Fame and was a director and its
publicity director. He was a member of New York State High School Umpire
Association and a certified sports official for high school/college volleyball,
softball, and high school basketball and track and field. He enjoyed
volunteering in the community, supported and engaged in local political
interests and was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV),
Marine Corps League, American Legion, Newburgh VFW and would do anything for
anyone. You could find him every morning at McDonalds enjoying coffee with his
friends. Pete loved his lawn and it was manicured like a golf course. He was
fortunate to have a career doing what he loved, sports and recreation. He worked
for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation program at the United States Military
Academy (USMA) West Point. He was the Bowling Center Manager at the USMA and
Fort Richardson Alaska, Assistant Sports Director Community Recreation USMA,
Sports and Fitness Director Steward Army Sub-Post and Leisure Travel Manager
USMA. He was a leader and took pride in customer service. He retired from the
Federal Government after 35 years of service. He was predeceased by his parents
Carmelo and Carmela and brother John. He is survived by his daughter Denise and
her fiancé Darrell, granddaughter Olivia and grandson Micah of Virginia, sisters
Marisa (Mary) Pelella, and Kathleen Cracolici, brothers Tony, Andrew, Patrick,
Joseph and 14 nieces and nephews. Services will be private and at the
convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for
Humanity, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), American Legion or the Hudson Valley
SPCA.
