Elizabeth Ann Smeltzer Brocker, 60, of the Town of Newburgh,
passed away peacefully at home Saturday, June 15.
Liz grew up in San Diego, CA, where she graduated from
Patrick Henry HS. She was fiercely proud of her SoCal
roots but happily called the Hudson Valley home after
meeting her future husband while he was visiting her home
town. Liz quickly adapted to her new surroundings, getting
married, starting a family, completing Bachelor’s and
Master’s degrees at SUNY New Paltz and embarking on a
27-year teaching career at Newburgh Free Academy.
Liz enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: long walks, collecting
sea shells on the beach, cherished friendships and watching
the Yankees without compromising her sense of curiosity,
adventure and love of travel.
Her true joy came from family. If her love and devotion was
the heart and soul of her family, then her
culinary skills were the sustenance, providing a spirit of
comfort, support and togetherness in good times and bad,
holidays or any day. She will be deeply missed by her
family, friends, and the many lives she touched, but her
indomitable spirit will be with us always.
Liz is survived by her husband of 36 years, Tom Brocker;
daughters, Shaughnessy Brocker of Poughkeepsie, NY and Katie
Brocker of Manhattan, NY; her mother, Gail Smeltzer and
brother, Rob Buller and his wife Darcy of San Diego,
CA; and several nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her father Roger Buller and step father
Walter Smeltzer.
A visitation and memorial service will be held Thursday,
June 20 at Brooks Funeral Home 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh,
NY, from 4- 7 pm. - November 18, 1963 ~ June 15, 2024
