Message:

Amherst Howard Lamb, Jr. was born in Winsted, Connecticut on November 27, 1915 to Amherst Howard Lamb, Sr. and Florence Harriet Lamb (Brown). He was the eldest of three children. Most of his early years were spent in Connecticut. The family moved to Newburgh, NY where "Am" to his family or "Howard" to his friends graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. In high school Howard was an excellent student and Student Manager of the football team. In January 1935 he eloped with his High School sweetheart Jane Lamont Smith of Newburgh, only to learn a few months later that he had received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point which he was not able to accept. In 1942 Mr. Lamb was the first father drafted from Dutchess County, NY. He served in the United States Army in the European Theater until the end of war. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Lamb worked for Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company and IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY and Ames Rubber Corporation in Hamburg, NJ. He and Jane were married for over 28 years and had two sons Amherst Robert and Roger Abraham. Jane passed away in 1963. In 1964 Howard met Judy Dority and her daughters who stole his heart and gave him a new life. In 1966 Howard married Julia "Judy" Dority and adopted Judy's two daughters Ann and Nancy. He raised them like his own and gave them a wonderful life and education. Howard was very active in Sparta, New Jersey where he lived for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church as an Elder and was an avid golfer and belonged to the Lake Mohawk Golf Club and served as President in the 1970's. After retiring from Ames Rubber Corporation as VP in Sales and Marketing in Hamburg, NJ, he and Judy moved down to Bonita Springs, FL, and traveled between Sparta, NJ and Bonita Springs every 6 months to keep us with their golfing interests and friends. After Judy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease they both settled in Charlottesville, VA where both their daughters lived. Once again Howard became a widower as Judy passed away in 2005. He has been living in Charlottesville since then at Our Lady of Peace, where he lived a very active life, making new friends and creating great memories. He read four newspapers a day and continued correspondence with all his friends near and far, sending articles of interest to friends and keeping in touch. Howard passed away March 6, 2011. Howard's wonderful outlook on life, his famous sense of humor, great sense of citizenship and his strong belief in god was part of his tremendous personality. He will be remembered as a truly gifted and admired man. He touched everyone he met and made friends everywhere he went. Dad never met a stranger. We will miss him terribly. He was truly one of a kind. Howard leaves behind two sons, Robert Lamb and his wife Kathleen, Roger Lamb and his wife Cheryl, two daughters, Ann Davis and her husband Eric and Nancy Howell and her husband Jesse. He has seven grandchildren, Terri, Toby, Robert, Todd, Christopher, Julia and Ethan, and six great grandchildren, Adrienne, Nicolette, Soryn, Alex, Isabella, and August. Family and friends are invited Friday March 18, 2011 10 am until the time of service to Goble Funeral Home 22 Main Street Sparta, NJ 07871. A funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, Sparta, NJ with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
