Wonderful teacher; very funny! Became a long-term friend (whom I ultimately replaced). My favorite memories include his famous, and often-used, "walking down into the basement behind the desk" routine, and a demo he did.
The demo involved sulfuric acid and sugar, which produces a lot of heat and a violent reaction with expansion. He got this worried look on his face and ran from the classroom. Total chaos erupted! Some kids headed for the second-floor window! The very large kid in front of me backpedaled until I was against the back lab desk (I was hiding behind him)! After it was clear we weren't going to die, he came back in, laughing his head off. Always had that Irish-elf twinkle in his eye. I'll miss him.
