Alan H. "Al" Atkins, Sr., 75, of Newburgh, New York,
passed away after a long illness on August 2, 2025, at St. Luke's
Cornwall Hospital in his hometown of Newburgh.
Born on March 4, 1950,
in Newburgh, Al was a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He
graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1969 and went on to study Electrical
Engineering at Dutchess County Community College. His education laid the
foundation for a long and accomplished career in public service.
Al
was a longtime member of the New York State Civil Service Employees
Association (CSEA). He retired from the New York State Department of
Corrections, where he served with dedication as a Maintenance Supervisor,
Facilities Engineer Level 1, and Boiler Specialist. His work reflected his
strong technical skills and commitment to maintaining safe and efficient
operations within the department.
Beyond his professional life, Al was
deeply involved in his community and passionate about the outdoors. A proud
supporter of The Boy Scouts of America, he devoted many years to mentoring
scouts. He served as Cub Scoutmaster of Pack 327 and later as Assistant
Scoutmaster of Troop 327 in Newburgh. His leadership left a lasting impact on
generations of scouts who benefited from his guidance and example.
An
avid outdoorsman, Al was a longtime member of the Wallkill Rod and Gun Club.
He found joy in hunting, fishing, and competitive target shooting pursuits
that brought him both peace and camaraderie.
In addition to his love for
the outdoors, he had a passion for model trains often spending hours
crafting, designing, and engineering them, relishing the quiet joy of
watching them come to life. He also deeply enjoyed the companionship of his
dogs, who were often by his side.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of
52 years, Joyce Atkins of Newburgh; two daughters: April Atkins of Newburgh
and Amanda Atkins of Minnesota; his cherished grandson, Ryan Thompson of
Minnesota. Al is also survived by his sister, Wendy Atkins.
He was
predeceased by his son, Alan Atkins Jr., as well as his parents, Florence and
Howard Atkins.
A celebration of life service will be held at a future
date.
Alan H. "Al" Atkins Sr. will be remembered as a loving husband and
father whose legacy lives on through all who were fortunate enough to know
him. May his memory offer comfort and peace to all those who mourn his
passing. - March 4, 1950 ~ August 2, 2025
