Elaine DeFeo - Class of 1967

    Elaine M. DeFeo, born January 17, 1949, a lifelong resident of New Windsor, entered into rest on November 22, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Marshall) DeFeo, Elaine was born in Amsterdam, N.Y. A graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, she earned her bachelor's degree from Ladycliff College and later completed a Master of Science in Teaching at SUNY New Paltz. Her creative path began early—first as a member of the "Bulletin Board Brigade" at Vails Gate Elementary School, where her artistic talent quickly became clear. Elaine went on to enjoy a long and devoted career as an elementary art teacher, inspiring generations of students with her enthusiasm, humor, and unwavering support for young artists.

Elaine remained deeply connected to the Newburgh Free Academy community long after her retirement, which was more than 20 years ago. She supported countless art shows and theater productions, attended the annual Empty Bowls charity event, and took great pride in NFA's renowned fashion shows. Elaine and her colleagues traveled to Miami and New York City, bringing real-world fashion experiences to their students. She delighted in the world of high fashion, NYC style, dining, and the latest trends and shared that passion generously with the young people she taught.

Elaine cherished friendships and community throughout her life. She was an active member of a local book club, the Red Hat Ladies, and a retired educators breakfast group that met monthly. Her circle of friends was wide, loyal, and loving, and she treasured every gathering.

Her Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her life. Elaine held a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mother and contributed her time and talents to numerous church groups, including the Catholic Daughters, the Sacred Heart Ladies, and the Over 60s Club. A longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, she volunteered regularly at the St. Anthony's Bazaar and other church celebrations. She also served with the Board of Elections, always greeting neighbors with her unforgettable smile.

Music played a special role in Elaine's life. She entertained residents at the nursing facility where her parents had lived—and where she later spent her final months sharing her cheerful voice, quick wit, and the warmth that endeared her to so many.

Elaine was immensely proud of her Italian heritage. She leaned into her family traditions through her cooking and baking, preparing beloved recipes and sharing her love of food with family, friends, and colleagues throughout her life.

In the years following her diagnosis, Elaine faced her illness with remarkable grace, experiencing minimal pain and maintaining her gentle positivity. Her final month was spent at the Fishkill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, where she was cared for with kindness by staff members, some of whom remembered her from her parents' time there. She enjoyed visits from many friends and family and reconnected daily with her cousin Brian, a resident at the facility. Her familiar smile and bright eyes brought comfort to all who visited her.

Elaine is survived by her godchildren, many cousins, and countless friends who cherished her kindness, loyalty, and gentle spirit. She was predeceased by her beloved parents as well as aunts, uncles, friends, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, at Sacred Heart Church, 301 Ann St., Newburgh, N.Y. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, N.Y.

As we say goodbye, we hold close the sunshine she brought into our lives and find peace in knowing she is with the loved ones who have gone before her, watching over those of us left on earth to do God's work as we hold fast to the fond memories of her time on earth. - January 17, 1949 ~ November 22, 2025
