Capt Hugh "Mick" Joseph McCullom - Class of 1964

      Capt Hugh "Mick"¯ Joseph McCullom (ret), 79, of Alexandria Virginia, passed away on February 7, 2026 in Alexandria.

Mick was born in Newburgh, New York to Bernice McCullom and Hugh Joseph McCullom on May 21, 1946. He went to school in Newburgh at the Newburgh Free Academy. He then received his Bachelors of Science from Manhattan College.

He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the Navy as a Naval Aviator flying the OV-10 Bronco¯ and S-3 Viking. He met his wife, Sarah Skipper, while he was a flight instructor and they were married on July 31, 1973 in Pensacola, FL. He retired after 31 years of service and was awarded the Legion of Merit (3), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Air Medal (3), and 35 Strike Medals with a Combat V¯, among others.

He continued his service to the government as a civil servant for the Department of Defense for another 17 years until he retired.

Mick is preceded in death by his wife Sarah, mother Bernice, and father Hugh.

He is survived by his daughter Dawn, son David, son-in-law Aras, daughter-in-law Corey, sisters Margo and Ellen, brother Tom, and grandchildren, Arijas, Paul, Karina, and Mackenzie.

Mick will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality who never met a stranger. He brought so many laughs, smiles, and funny stories to everyone he met.

Memorial donations may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The McCullom family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to his Inova Doctors, his Thrive caregivers, Capital Caring, family and close friends for all of their amazing love and support.

The Visitation will be 1-2 PM, February 10, 2026 at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA. This will be directly followed by the Memorial Service from 2-3 PM.

The Funeral and Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
