John Albert Townsend, born on July 8, 1932, in Newburgh, New York, passed away on February 8, 2026.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly seventy years, Patricia Townsend, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and adventure.
He is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia Townsend, Lisa Townsend, and Kirstin Townsend Zarras and her husband Dean Zarras. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to his seven cherished grandchildren, Danielle, Jarrod, Chelsea, Haley, Alexia, Ben, and Tim, and a loving great-grandfather to his three beloved great-grandchildren, Mac, Rory, and Beatrice.
John proudly served his country as a United States Air Force veteran. He was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned both his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and his Master of Business Administration.
John and Patricia raised their family in Trumbull, Connecticut, creating a home filled with love. In retirement, they divided their time between Naples, Florida, and Wilmington, North Carolina, continuing to build memories together.
John had a deep love for travel and food, passions he joyfully shared with Patricia. Together, they traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. A true Francophile, John especially loved the wine, food, and language of France. He was also an avid reader, with a particular interest in World War II history, and a devoted sports fan, most especially of the Carolina Hurricanes.
More than anything, John treasured time spent with his family. A self proclaimed "foodie", he loved being with everyone around a table. He was a life long learner with a relentless curiosity. His legacy lives on through the generations he loved so deeply and the memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those who knew him.
In his final days John was cared for at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. Donations can be made in his honor by clicking HERE.
