Elizabeth Jane Toohey Trokey 1935-2026 of Lakeland, Florida, passed away peacefully at Good Shepherd Hospice in the loving arms of her daughter Caryn Collins on February 3, 2026. Elizabeth is survived by her brother John Toohey of Pompano Beach, Florida, and children Martin (Constance) and Scott (Katherine) of Orland Park, IL, and Caryn (William) of Lakeland, Florida; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and John Toohey; her sister, Jeanne; and her former husband, Martin S. Trokey.

Elizabeth was born on February 23, 1935, to Elizabeth and John Toohey. She grew up in Newburgh, New York, along with her two siblings. Her family and friends called her Betty when she was younger. Elizabeth graduated from Newburgh Free Academy class of 1953. She married Marty in July 1955, and they relocated to the Chicagoland area to raise a family. Betty was soon referred to as Liz by her close friends, who preceded her in death.

Liz had ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; when she spoke of them, you could see the joy in her eyes. She was a voracious reader and helped instill the passion in her grandchildren. Liz enjoyed being outdoors, taking in sights and sounds of nature. In 2011, Liz moved to Littleton, Colorado, to be closer to her daughter Caryn. Liz longed for the Rocky Mountains and requested her final resting place be in Rocky Mountain National Park overlooking the valley below.

In 2018, Liz was moved to Lakeland, Florida, by her daughter Caryn to care for her, where she lived until her passing. Children and grandchildren came to celebrate her 90th birthday last year. To commemorate her most recent birthday, a few of her loved ones organized trips this year. Sadly, she passed away shortly before her 91st birthday. Liz leaves behind a legacy as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Liz touched many lives, was loved a lot, and will be greatly missed.
