Robert Cummings - Class of 1954

      Robert J. Cummings passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marion Cummings, of Surfside Beach, SC.

Bob was born on August 10, 1935, in Newburgh, NY to John and Annastacia Dowling Cummings. Following graduation from NFA, Class of 1954, he enlisted in the US Navy for four years, serving aboard the U.S.S. Wrangell and the U.S.S. Noxubee as a Morse Code Operator, then in communications at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

While working for IBM for 32 years, he attended Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY and received a B.A. in 1969. He retired in 1992.

Bob is also survived by children, Robert, Jr. at home, Cheryl (John) Leavy of Tridell, UT, and Tracy Miles (Jan) of Albany, NY; brother-in-law, Bud Smith of Marmora, NJ; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Pat Smith, and his brothers, Phillip C. and John T. Cummings.

Bob's claim to fame was receiving two free beers from Hollywood actor Errol Flynn in Barcelona, Spain in 1956.

He loved living in Surfside Beach and had met so many wonderful people. He enjoyed his Tuesday and Thursday's golf group. On Fridays, he enjoyed going to the American Legion in Murrells Inlet.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday March 24, 2026 at 3PM at St. Michael Catholic Church, Cypress Ave. Garden City, SC 29576. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held immediately following the service, at the church columbarium.
