Barbara
C. Cunningham Vogel - Class of 1949
With our hearts full of love & gratitude, we announce the passing of our dear mother, Barbara C. Vogel, on April 4, 2026, at Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville, VA.
She was born to James and Mildred Cunningham, on 01/20/1932 in Providence, RI. and was raised in Newburgh, NY.
Barbara studied at Katharine Gibbs School in Providence, RI and graduated with a secretarial degree which led to her employment at West Point, USMA. There she met her future husband, Herbert Davis Vogel, Jr. He always said that as soon as he saw her smile, he knew she was the one for him! That smile, good humor and Catholic Faith is what sustained them for 71 years of marriage. It is also what she will be remembered best for by loved ones and friends.
Being the wife of an Army officer meant she became a pro at moving, navigating new cities and overseeing her 3 daughters' education. She was our task master but also biggest fan. Mom loved skiing, horseback riding, ice skating and camping when we lived in Colorado Springs. But mostly she loved golfing, reading and socializing with friends. She excelled at making friends wherever she moved.
Barbara is survived by her 3 daughters and their husbands, Robin Stein (Rob), Gay Bulan (Philippe) and Susan Wilson (Bruce). Also, 5 grandchildren, Meredith, Rebecca, Alex, Brent and Olivia and 4 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Davis Vogel Jr. on August 9, 2023.
The family has entrusted Bliley Funeral Home of Henrico with mom's cremation. There will be a Rite of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Rd, Henrico, VA. on May 15 at 10:30am. A reception at the church will follow the ceremony, and all are welcome.
There will be an inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Instead of flowers, please feel free to make donations to St. Judes in her name or any charity of your choice.
