Lewis Rathbone - Class of 1968

    Lewis J. Rathbone Jr., lovingly known as "Lew," was born on May 30, 1950, and passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at his home in Lewes, Delaware, on Friday, May 15, at the age of 75. Lew leaves behind a lifetime of adventure, kindness, and unforgettable stories.

Born at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Lew was the oldest of five children and was raised in Norfolk, Virginia, and later in Newburgh, New York, alongside his siblings Bobbi, John, Mark, and Rick.

Lew proudly graduated from Rutgers University and devoted his professional life to a distinguished career as a Landscape Architect, a field that reflected both his creativity and appreciation for the world around him. While living most of his adult life in Philadelphia, he was a devoted partner to Roy and formed many wonderful friendships that lasted more than 50 years. In retirement, Lewis made his home in Lewes, where he remained active with his gym, church, and endless house projects.

Lew's family and friends were his pride and joy. He loved so much about life; people, traveling, music, and studying the Rathbone heritage, to name just a few. He explored the world, visiting every U.S. state and nearly every continent, always eager for the next road trip, reunion, or vacation.

Since joining the Unitarian Universalist congregation, he had found a true sense of belonging and community. There, he faithfully served on both the Landscape and Hospitality Committees, generously sharing his time, talents, and warm spirit with others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Lewis; his partner, Roy; and his brothers, Mark and Rick. He is survived by his sister, Bobbi; brother, John; nieces Kristen, Melissa, Naomi, Jennifer, and Christina; nephews Tim and Jason; and many cousins and others to whom he remained very close.

His vibrant personality touched everyone around him. His caring and sentimental heart, gift for storytelling, and the countless memories he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His lasting impact will never be forgotten.
