Cathy Cahill of New Windsor, a retired teacher, artist and community volunteer, died peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026, after a lengthy battle with ALS. She was 77.
The daughter of the late Catherine and Ralph M. Aiello of Newburgh, she was born June 1, 1949. Cathy was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and The College of Mount Saint Vincent.
She married Warren Cahill, a fellow teacher, in 1975, and together they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October 2025.
Cathy dedicated more than 30 years to education, teaching mathematics at James I. O'Neill High School and Cornwall Senior High School. Along the way, she and Warren raised three children
"Brendan, Elizabeth and Michael" all of whom attended Newburgh schools and went on to successful careers and lives of their own.
Following her retirement from teaching, Cathy pursued a variety of interests that reflected her creativity and love of learning. She became a certified yoga instructor and later developed into an accomplished pastel artist known for her landscape paintings.
A lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Cathy remained deeply connected to the Newburgh community. She was an active member of the Newburgh Historical Society, where she especially enjoyed helping decorate the Crawford House for the organization's annual Candlelight Tour. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts, attending performances by the Newburgh Symphony Orchestra and Newburgh Chamber Music, and enjoyed dancing to the music of local swing bands, particularly The Swing Shift Orchestra.
Above all, Cathy cherished her family, friends and community. Having spent her entire life within a stone's throw of the Hudson River, she maintained a deep appreciation for the history, culture and people of the region she called home.
In addition to her husband, Warren, she is survived by her sons, Brendan Cahill (Crystal) of Buford, Georgia, and Michael Cahill (Marina) of Porto, Portugal; her daughter, Elizabeth Delmelle (Eric) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her brothers, Carl Aiello (Rosanna Rossi) of Newburgh and Richard Aiello of Wakefield, Rhode Island; her grandchildren, Adrien, Amilee, Brooke and Isabel; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
Private cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be made to ALS United Greater New York (als-ny.org) or to the charity of one's choice.
