Matthew Grimm - Class of 1987

    Matthew Simmons Grimm, 57, a lifelong Newburgh resident, beloved son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend, passed away in his childhood home with his mother and sister at his bedside in the early morning hours of July 20, 2026, after a brief illness.

Matthew (Matt, Matty, Uncle Matty) was born June 12, 1969, to John A. Grimm and Shelby Davis Grimm of Newburgh, NY. He graduated from Manhattan College and worked for 30 years as a civil engineer inspector with Tectonic Engineering. During his career, he made significant contributions to projects like the construction of One World Trade Center and the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

Matthew was the family's international traveler, covering many continents and having thrilling historical and culinary adventures. He loved reading, nurtured his inquisitiveness in philosophy, was an avid Jets fan, and shared his creativity through cooking, barbecue, and grilling. His dedication, accomplishments, and love of life inspired pride, respect, and treasured memories among his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his father, John A. Grimm, and sister, Diane M. Grimm, with whom he is reunited in heaven. He is survived by his mother, Shelby Davis Grimm of Newburgh, NY; brother Andrew Grimm (Karen) of Newburgh, NY; brother Michael Grimm (Julie) of Ocean Springs, MS; sister Maureen Rivera (George) of Wallkill, NY; brother Richard Grimm (Christi) of Shohola, PA; his nieces and nephews: Nicholas and Maureen Casiano; Andrew, Johanna, Kayla, and Joshua Grimm; Megan, Diane, and George Rivera; and David and Emily Grimm; as well as many cousins and friends.

While the family struggles to understand this profound loss, they have cherished memories of his humor, his infectious and booming laughter, and the joy that he brought to everyone around him, which highlight the deep bonds he shared with his loved ones. He truly was a bright light to the entire family and will be dearly missed.

Services by Brooks Funeral Home were private, and Matthew will be interred with his father and sister at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Middle Hope, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties in Matthew's name, helping others in his memory. - June 12, 1969 ~ July 20, 2026
