Lennox Brown - Class of 1952

From: [X]Fran Olson Gustafson 1965 | Date: 2026-10-30 20:35:46

Lennox Duane Brown entered into rest on Thursday, October 29, 2026. He was born February 14, 1934, in Cornwall, New York, the son of Lennox Pilcher Brown and Ottilie Brown. He grew up in the Newburgh area and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1952. He went on to Orange County Community College, graduating in 1954 with an associate's degree in engineering.

Following college, Lennox worked for the engineering firm Metcalf & Eddy, where surveying assignments took him to Iceland, Newfoundland, Labrador, and other remote areas. He later served in the United States Army, receiving harborcraft and boat training and working with experimental amphibious vehicles known as BARCs, including an assignment on Baffin Island.

After returning to Newburgh, Lennox pursued his entrepreneurial interests. In 1958, he and high school friend Bill Pittman founded Pittman & Brown, initially as a painting business. Lennox later expanded his interests into the taxi business and real estate. He took pride in hard work and found satisfaction in building, creating, and working with his hands.

In 1962, while skiing in the Catskills, Lennox met Linda Gail Roman. Following a short engagement, they married on December 8, 1962. Their early years together included a farmhouse with dirt floors, which gave Linda's father some understandable reservations. But together they built a loving home and an enduring marriage grounded in mutual care, shared responsibilities, and a commitment to family. They raised three children, Lisa Elaine, Laurel Sue, and Lennox Watson.

Lennox and Linda shared a belief in working hard, staying active, and making time for fun and family. They spent many winter weekends skiing in the Catskills and summers at places including Montauk, Long Beach Island, and Lake George. Together, they created a family life rich in activity, time spent outdoors, and traditions that would carry through the generations.

An avid outdoorsman, Lennox enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, gardening, and rehabbing homes. He was happiest working with his hands or spending time outside, whether sailing with friends, ice fishing with his buddies, or tending his garden. He also had a creative eye and a talent for transforming natural materials, particularly birchbark and wood, into beautiful, handcrafted pieces. At the end of a productive day, he appreciated a good glass of wine.

Lennox instilled a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren, sometimes through unconventional methods that left them with stories to tell. A man of few words but strong opinions, his familiar "hmmmm" could serve as an entire response. Though reserved in expressing emotion, his love for his family was unmistakable, sometimes revealing itself in the tenderest of goodbyes.

In retirement, Lennox remained active with Habitat for Humanity, spending countless hours building homes and working at the ReStore in Newburgh. It gave him an opportunity to continue doing what he enjoyed most: working with his hands, putting his skills to use, and staying busy.

Above all, Lennox treasured time with his family, especially his four grandchildren. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, creativity, love of nature, independent spirit, and the quiet ways he showed his affection. His legacy lives on in the values, traditions, and appreciation for the outdoors he passed along to his family.

Lennox is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; his three children and their families: Lisa and Mark Cassas; Laurel and Gene Smith and their children, Owen and Karley; and Lennox and Beth Brown and their children, Sean and Colin.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Janet Suydam.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Lennox's memory to Habitat for Humanity in Newburgh, New York, an organization to which he generously gave his time and talents.
All Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
