CITY OF NEWBURGH - A 17-year-old is dead and a 13-year-old is in custody, charged with murder after a knife fight Wednesday in Newburgh. Police identified the 17-year-old as Levy King Flores of Newburgh. Officers responded at 4:20 p.m. to the Newburgh campus of St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital for reports of a 17-year-old and 12-year-old who had been stabbed. While they were there a 14-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl also arrived in the emergency room with stab wounds. Flores, the 17-year-old, was stabilized and boarded onto a helicopter bound for Westchester Medical Center. He died on the way. Police were able to speak to him and the 12-year-old at St. Luke's and learned there had been some sort of fight at the corner of First Street and Carpenter Avenue. Police said their investigation led them to the 13-year-old suspect. He was charged with second-degree murder and arraigned in city court before he was placed into custody of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Police did not release his name. Two of the three others injured in the fight were flown to Westchester Medical Center. All three are expected to survive. Newburgh Police Chief Eric Paolilli held a press conference for noon on Thursday. He said police had already arrested four students at Newburgh Free Academy, the district's sole high school. Lots of police have been added to district schools to deal with fallout from the stabbings, he said. Peter Copeletti, NFA principal, said "some students were grieving, others were angry." Parents had been coming to school to pick up their children Thursday afternoon. The situation prompted school officials to declare an "emergency crisis" Thursday and close all district schools Friday. All after school activities Thursday were cancelled, including an orientation session at NFA for junior high students.Copeletti said this was the first time in all his years with the district that he has experienced a situation like this. It is more than just a school district issue, he said, "It is really a community crisis." To report any information, call the City of Newburgh police detective division at 569-7509. All calls will be kept confidential.
