Greene,
Lt. Oscar Roy was killed in Belgium and is buried there, at the Henri
Chapelle Cemetery. My Uncle Roy did go to NFA. He was born in Newburgh
on May 8th 1920, and graduated from NFA in January of 1939. He attended
college at New Paltz, before going into the Army in 1942. He went to
officers training school at I think Ft. Hood, and was involved in
training West Point cadets in the tank destroyer division before going
to Europe. I have attached two pictures of him, the same ones that my
brother sent to the Jourdain's in Belgium so they would now who was
buried in the grave they visit. My Dad's brother, Dwight John Flemming
was wounded in France, and died later from infections to his head wounds
stateside. I just learned that when my Mom's brother left Newburgh, to
go off to fight WWII, 13 other volunteers left the same day, Feb. 13th
1942, which was Friday the 13th. My uncle, Lt. Oscar Roy Greene was
killed in Belgium and is buried there, at the Henri Chapelle Cemetery. http://www.inproudremembrance.com/Henri-Chapelle%20Photos.html
I wondered of the 13 who left on the 13th how many returned. My brother
mentioned that Sam Aquaro was one that returned home and had faithfully
maintained the grass at the War Memorial at the junction of 9W and 94 in
New Windsor, until his passing. I have attached a newspaper clipping
that my brother found.

Kucyk,
Anna Sophoclides, of Newburgh, entered into rest Tuesday, September 25,
2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was 91. The daughter of
the late Alex and Anna Romanczuk Kucyk, Anna was born February 28, 1922
in Newburgh. She was raised on Edward Street during the Great
Depression, by two loving, hard-working Ukrainian immigrants Alex and
Anna. First in her family to graduate from high school, which inspired
her youngest sibling, Peter, to achieve the goal of being a Naval
Academy graduate. She was married shortly after graduating from Newburgh
Free Academy to a Greek-Cypriot, the love of her life Patrocolos "Pat"
Sophoclides. Anna and Pat had a loving, strong marriage. Throughout
their life together they ran several restaurants, two of them in
Newburgh, first was Pat's on lower Broadway and culminating in a
restaurant they opened in the 1980's with their youngest daughter,
Alexis, and her husband, George. The restaurant, named for the two
family patriarchs, "Pat and George's" was a family affair for many
years, and a fixture in the Upper Broadway neighborhood for all its
patrons. She enjoyed traveling and got her first taste of the lifelong
love of it during a journey to Cyprus by ship in 1948, stopping through
the ports of England, France, Italy and Egypt. Quite the experience for
a young mother of two young children. She loved the theater, museums and
all New York City had to offer. She was an avid reader of non-fiction
particularly regarding information about health and wellness. She would
clip out helpful articles and pass them on to friends and family so they
might consider adding healthy foods and vitamins to their diets in lieu
of turning to medication as the only source of wellness. Passionate
about her St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the community. She
volunteered often to help with church functions and was the treasurer
for the Ladies Society of the church for many years. She had a special
love for her country as military bride of a WWII veteran and was
involved with the Ladies Aux. of the American Legion Post 1420. Very
practical and methodical throughout her life with ability to always find
the right solution. Known for her hospitality, thoughtfulness and
kindness among her family and friends. Nothing was more important to
Anna than her family, she was so proud and supportive of all of her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anytime the family got
together, Anna could be seen grinning ear-to-ear, soaking in all of the
love in the room. She was in return loved devotedly. Survivors include

Newburgh, Diana McDougall and husband Bill of Southington, Ct., a son,
Chris Sophoclides and wife Paula of Canandaigua, NY, grandchildren;

Levinson,
Gilbert
Born Aug. 1, 1920 Died April 1980
Levinson,
Thelma Loth Wexler of Balmville died Monday, December 12, 2011 after many
years of Parkinson's and other debilitating illnesses. Born in Newburgh on
October 19, 1922, Thelma was the only child of Samuel "Broadway" Levinson
and Nettie Cohen Levinson. She was educated in Newburgh schools from AME
Zion nursery school through to graduating Newburgh Free Academy at 16 as
Salutatorian of the Class of 1939. Thelma went on to receive a BSc magna
cum laude at Albany State (now SUNY) in 1943. Although passionate about
English and History, she accepted the well-meaning advice of her college
dean that she would have trouble getting a job teaching these subjects
with a name like Levinson. Therefore, she trained to teach more "socially
acceptable" business studies. Not only academically gifted, she was an
avid sportswoman in her early years, taking every opportunity to ice skate
on the Polly in Newburgh's Downing Park opposite her Third Street home on
custom-made racers. She was also highly sociable, becoming head of her
sorority at Albany State. In 1944, she married Dr. A. Milton Loth, also of
Newburgh, and had two children, Susan and Dale. As well as helping
establish her husband's dental office over her father's store on Broadway,
Thelma was active in the League of Women Voters and the Broadway School
PTA. She was also a member of the Agudas Israel synagogue and Hadassah.
After Dr. Loth's untimely death in 1960, she renewed her teaching
qualifications, becoming head of Business Studies at Marlborough Central
High School and later head of area Business Studies teachers. In 1968,
Thelma left teaching and married Daniel Wexler of Wexler's Pharmacy,
settling into a quieter life centered on the house and delightful garden
they built overlooking the Hudson on Susan Drive. Thelma is survived by
her son, Dale Loth, an architect in London, and by grandson, Michael
Silverstein of Seattle, as well as nieces and nephews in the USA and
Canada. Her daughter, Dr. Susan Loth, a physical anthropologist, died from
the same cancer as Milton Loth in 2002. The funeral will take place at
Agudas Israel Cemetery, Erie Avenue, New Windsor, on Friday, December 16
at 11:30 a.m. Contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association
would be welcome in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are under the care of

War, Franklin enlisted in the Navy to defend his homeland. Because of
his experience in the medical field, he was assigned to a sub chaser (PC
1213) and became the ship's medic. His shipmates called him Doc at all
of his Navy reunions following the end of the War and for many years
after. Frank's Patriotism never wavered and he was proud to have served
his country, but it was his love for his family that remains his legacy.
Generations to come will hear his many stories that he left behind.
Following his service to his country in World War II, he returned to
Newburgh and his wife and firstborn and went to work at the Newburgh
Felt Mill for several years. He accepted a position with the newly
formed IBM Corporation and after 30 years of dedicated and distinguished
service, he received the coveted IBM President's Award. His career at
IBM included his service to NASA during the 1960s when JFK initiated the
Space Program and Frank would be privileged to be a part of the Project
Mercury team at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. He was the
Special Operations Manager at Goddard. Frank joined the Black Rock Fish
& Game Club with his brothers: John and William in 1946 and they
were a few of the founding members at Black Rock. Throughout the years,
Frank held every office in the Club including President, Treasurer,
Member Secretary, Director and Chairman of Work Committees to name just
a few. He remains the only Black Rock Member to be elected to every
officer chair including the President's seat. The meeting hall at Black
Rock Fish & Game Club was dedicated to him for his past service.
Frank utilized that meeting hall every single Friday night to meet with
his beloved card players. Frank passed at home on Hospice, surrounded by
his family whom loved him dearly and are now devastated by his passage.
We did not "lose" him, we have lost sight of him only until the Lord
calls us home to Heaven to be reunited with him. Visitation will be held
from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 17th at Brooks Funeral
Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Funeral Service will be held at 11
a.m. on Tuesday, February 18th, with Pastor Abe Dueck of Grace Community
Church officiating at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at the
Cedar Hill Mausoleum in Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Hospice of

Supple, Anne Cramer
Orig Posted by Dom Colotti 48 - Anne Supple Cramer passed away peacefully on April 13, 2007 at the age of 84. Born in Beacon, N.Y., fifth child of John and Agnes O'Toole Supple, she graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1939 and received her B.A. from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1943, graduating along with her brother, Robert and her sister, Queene. She married Harry Griffith Cramer II of Johnstown, Pa., at West Point, N.Y. in 1947. While serving as a Captain with the First Special Forces in 1957, he became the first U.S. casualty of the Vietnam War. Mrs. Cramer then returned to Newburgh, where she resumed her career as an Elementary School Teacher from 1959 until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed her travels throughout the United States, Asia and Europe, became and expert duplicate Bridge player, and following her move to Saratoga, Calif. in 2003, was a regular at the Bridge Club at the Saratoga Senior Center, and served as a volunteer at the Echo Shop. She will be remembered for her intelligence, spirit, strength and caring. Her sister, Helen Gurian; brother-in-law, Dr. Harvey Gurian, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Supple survive her. She was a devoted mother to her children, Kainan Bolger (Harry), Anne Quinn Cramer (Matthew Bonn), and Harry G. "Hank" Cramer (Kit); loving grandmother to Kelly Frazier (K.J.), Christopher and Harry G. Cramer IV, Amanda, Susannah and Matthew Bonn; and great-grandmother to Jasmine and Mekayla Frazier. Funeral services will be held at a later date in West Point, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Anne Supple Cramer was married to Capt. Harry Griffith Cramer Jr. History now considers Capt. Harry Griffith Cramer Jr. — West Point Class of 1946 — the first American soldier killed in Vietnam. http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1946/15816/
Anne Supple Cramer was married to HARRY GRIFFITH CRAMER, JR. He was born 1 May 1926 at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He came from a long line of "citizen soldiers going all the way back to the French and Indian Wars. His grandfather was a first sergeant of Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. His father, Harry G. Cramer, Sr. (known as Coach), was a Johnstown math teacher and football coach who enlisted in WWI, earned an Officer Candidate School commission and served as an Infantry company commander in France. Coach Cramer probably had the greatest influence on Harry's ultimate choice of the Army as his life's ambition. By the tender age of eight, young Harry already commanded armies of lead Civil War soldiers which completely filled the Cramer parlor. Harry graduated from Johnstown High School in 1942, but he was too young to enter West Point. So he attended Carson Long Military Institute near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in the interim and entered West Point on I July 1943, the youngest member of the Class of' 1946. Having been a fine high school football player, Harry started out practicing with the Army squad. However, Harry quickly came to the conclusion that he could not stay on the Corps Squad and handle the academic load. He made the decision to drop from Corps Squad not withstanding the associated advantages that would have made plebe year more bearable. It was a tough decision for Harry, not made easier by pressure from the coaches and upperclassmen, but it showed early on his determination to set his priorities correctly. Harry was blessed with two things that helped make cadet life bearable. One was a real sense of humor that allowed him to take bureaucratic nonsense in stride -- he never let things get him down. The other, which caused him more than a few demerits, was an overriding temptation to test the system right to its limit. This inevitably led to occasionally getting caught just across line. On balance, Harry thought it was worth it, a Saturday or two lost not withstanding. After graduation, Harry, completed the Infantry Basic and the Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia. During this period, he and a classmate Frank (Taffy) Tucker owned a surplus Taylorcraft airplane and spent their weekends flying to New Orleans, Savannah and other exotic spots. They sometimes ran into delays on their cross-country flights, barely making it back to Fort Benning in time for class on Monday mornings. This happened so often that Harry earned the nickname "Hairbreadth Harry". It was during this time that one of his West Point roommates, who had gone into the Air Force, flew into Benning in a newly acquired jet to do an air show. He accepted a ride from Harry in his small plane and reported he flew with a real flair. The Air Force roommate was just a little concerned when Harry squinted at a rumpled Shell auto road map to learn exactly where they were. Following his school stint at Fort Benning, Harry returned to West Point to marry Anne Supple at the Catholic Chapel on 25 June 1947. He then shipped out for a tour with the occupation forces in Japan, serving with the Ist Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division. Harry returned to the United States just before the outbreak of the Korean War to serve with the 82nd Airborne Division. He immediately volunteered for combat duty and rejoined his old outfit, commanding the same company, B Company, that he had commanded in Japan. Within a month of taking his unit into combat, Harry was severely wounded by heavy machine gun fire in the fighting around the "Iron Triangle." After evacuation to a hospital in Japan, he spent three months recuperating, then rejoined the 24th Infantry. Assigned again as a company commander, he was hit on his second day on the line. The wound was less serious this time and he recovered in a field hospital and came back to the 24th to command Company D. For his bravery in combat with the 24th Regiment, Harry was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. The 24th Regiment was disbanded in late September 1951, the last of the segregated units in the Army. Harry was reassigned to the 14th Infantry where he again was a company commander. By this time, combat had slackened and Harry's letters to his family indicated that it was a time for holding the line and waiting for the truce talks to start. It was during this period, September 1951, that Harry lost his best friend. Taffy Tucker, with whom he had owned the airplane at Fort Benning, was killed in an assault on a Chinese position just a few hilltops away from Harry. During this stalemate in the fall of 1951, Harry was able to get detailed to fly as an observer with artillery spotter pilots. The rationale being that as a former rifle and weapons company commander, he could coach his artillery counterparts as to likely "hide" positions for Chinese Infantry. Harry rotated home in 1952 and was assigned to the G-2 staff, 82nd Airborne Division. After attending the Infantry Advanced Course at Fort Benning, he returned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and volunteered for duty with Special Forces. He served as detachment commander with the 77th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg in 1955-56. He was then selected to become the S-3 for a new group being activated in the Pacific. As part of the cadre, Harry was transferred to Fort Shafter, Hawaii, in April 1956. As the unit expanded it was formally activated as 1st Special Forces Group and posted to Fort Buckner, Okinawa. As S-3 of the new group, Harry was responsible to plan Mobile Training Team missions to southeast Asian countries to conduct a variety of schools: airborne, ranger and guerrilla/counter guerrilla operations. Due to the A" detachments being understrength and having less experienced people, in two instances Harry formed provisional detachments and actually performed the mission. During 1956-57, Harry planned missions to Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines. During the fall of 1956, he commanded a Mobile Training Team sent to Thailand and conducted airborne, jumpmaster and ranger training for the new Royal Thai Ranger Battalion. In 1957, Harry was placed in command of a Mobile Training Team with the mission of organizing and training the cadre of the South Vietnamese Special Forces. The thrust of the training was guerrilla warfare, not counterinsurgency. The training ran from June--November 1957 with a graduation exercise in late October to consist of realistic ambushes and raids on an ARVN division in the field about ten miles south of Nha Trang. At dusk on 21 October 1957, Harry Griffith Cramer, Jr. was killed by an explosion while watching the initiation of the ambush drill. The official Report of Death states, "While engaged in exercise demonstrating principles of vehicle ambush, deceased was in vicinity of man throwing TNT block which exploded while in throwing position." The official Army position is that the TNT block involved was a deteriorated French explosive and caused the premature explosion. However, the uninjured Special Forces medic who attended to Harry and the other team medic, also injured, states unequivocally that several Viet Cong (VC) mortar rounds were fired at the Special Forces advisors coincident with the initiation of the ambush drill. The medic's account is lent credence by the fact that at dawn the next day, 22 October 1957, the VC detonated a bomb outside the bus stop at JUSMAAG billets in Saigon, wounding 14 United States personnel. We will never know for sure exactly how Harry became the first United States military casualty in Vietnam. We do know that his country lost a brave, gallant, dedicated soldier; one whose future held the promise of brilliance. Harry was survived by his wife Anne, son Harry III, and two daughters, Kainan and Anne. When the Vietnam Memorial was dedicated in November 1982, Harry's family fully expected to see his name first among those inscribed since the names are listed in chronological order of the date of death in Southeast Asia. To their bewilderment, not only was Harry not the first name listed, it was not even inscribed on the monument. Determined to correct this injustice to his father, young Harry III, now a captain in the Army, set out to tackle the bureaucracy. The first thing he learned was that "political considerations" influenced the decision to set the original cutoff date for Vietnam casualties as 1961. After seemingly endless correspondence and haggling, and with the help of several of his father's '46 classmates, young Harry finally achieved the acknowledgement that his father was the first United States casualty (death) in Southeast Asia. Finally in November 1983, Harry Griffith Cramer, Jr's name was added to those on the monument. Harry was a great proponent of Special Forces. In 1955 he was at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and had the chance to talk to a classmate about the state of the world. He felt that the Korean War had changed how the Army must conduct its business in future wars, and he felt that guerrilla operations should and would become the key to success. Not only was Harry a great proponent of Special Forces, Special Forces recognized Harry's brilliance in that area of expertise. When Harry was killed in South Vietnam, 1st Special Forces took the unusual step of having all personnel wear black armbands for 30 days. In 1987, 1st Special Forces moved into a new $50 million compound at Fort Lewis, Washington, designed especially for the unit. Each street and building was named in honor of a distinguished Special Forces veteran. Road number 1 in the complex was designated CRAMER AVENUE in honor of Captain Harry Griffith Cramer, Jr. Harry died doing what he loved--soldiering with Special Forces. He was one of those unique individuals who perform at their peak in combat situations. The combat part of our business can use every Harry Cramer it can get--unfortunately we have all too few of them. Harry joined the Long Gray Line in 1957, a tried and true warrior son of West Point. We who remain behind, his family, friends and classmates, cherish his memory and know that "Duty, Honor, Country" was the credo by which Harry Griffith Cramer, Jr. lived and died.

Invention of Famous Jewish Scientist is Marveled at by the Entire World
The invention by the famous Jewish scientist Dr. Murray Zelikoff of an
artificial star which is ten times more luminous than the planet Venus
is being marveled at by the entire scientific world. The artificial stir
was dropped from a height of 88,000 feet in New Mexico, and a stretch of
17 miles was lit up by the star. Dr. Zelikoff is the chief of the
chemistry laboratory of the Air Force which is located in Hanscom Field
in Bedford. This is one of the famous inventions which he has recently
made in the world of science. Creating the star cost over 100,000
dollars, but the scientists say that with the new invention it is very
possible that the dark nights will entirely disappear thanks to the
illumination of the artificial star. Dr. Murray Zelikoff, who lives at
183 Cedar Street, Lexington, Mass, is the son of a devoted, longtime
Forward reader and member of the Workman's Circle, Ella Zelikoff. Dr.
Zelikoff was born in Newburg, N.Y. 34 years ago, he Is mailed to his
wife Charlotte and they have two young sons.
