Black David J.
passed away peacefully on November 5, 2012, at home, surrounded by his
family. He was the son of the late Florence (Peters) Black and the late
Ronald Black. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on September 16, 1953. He
moved back to New Windsor after spending 22 years in the Army, stationed
in Texas, California and Germany, and proudly served in the first Gulf
War. The military and his country were a part of him. After retiring
from the Army he worked at the Veteran's Administration in Goshen, NY
and helped establish the Orange County Veteran's Cemetery, which
fulfilled him immensely. He then worked at West Point as the Safety and
Occupational Health Specialist, before retiring from government service
because of his illness. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen (Finan) Black;
daughters, Tara Black (Michael); Kelly (Black) Loverdi (Michael); and
his son, David James Black, at home; his granddaughter, Aliyah Manning
and granddaughter, Giada Loverdi, to be born this month; sisters,
Colleen (Black) Diaz, Kathleen (Black) Ianuzzi (Victor); brothers: the
late Ronald Black, Steven Black (Phyllis) and Michael Black (Charlene);
sisters-in-law: Patricia Corona, Marybeth Simone, Cindy Finan and
Christine Finan; brothers-in-law: Jim Finan, Michael Finan, Carmen
Corona and Frank Simone; many beautiful and caring nieces and nephews
whom he loved dearly, as well as they loved him. We would like to thank
them all for bringing him such joy. Dave was well-liked by anyone who
met him; this is evident by the many acts of kindness and messages we
are receiving. Before his illness, Dave enjoyed coaching baseball at New
Windsor Little League. He also took pride in teaching fundamentals to
the teams and was proud when he saw any of the boys he coached still
call him "Coach". He had a special gift that made the teams he coached
want to win and even brought them to the championship one year. He was
so proud of them that he talked about it until the next baseball season!
He taught the teams he coached that playing as a team and working
together was the winning way. He loved life, laughing, telling jokes and
debating with anyone who could stand up to the challenge! As a hobby, he
bought a guitar and books to teach himself to play. He was almost there
and how his "guitar gently weeps". We would also like to thank Hospice
of Orange and Sullivan Counties, who came to the house and helped us
with Dave's care until his last days, as well as the staff at palliative
care at the Veteran's Hospital at Castle Point in Fishkill, NY. Their
assistance will never be forgotten. Special thanks to our West Point
family for all their prayers and support during this difficult time.

family, attended the Newburgh Enlarged School System, graduated from
