Anderson, Alfreda Born May 1, 1890
Died March 15, 1969 in Newburgh
Born in Canastota, NY to Louis and Philomena Aquino…brother of Phyllis
(and later Thomas), Antone grew to have an intense love for music at an
early age. He played the organ at church, and sang whenever he had a
chance. In high school, he was “recruited” by Helen Hosmer to attend
Potsdam State Teacher’s College. As a music education student, he sang in
choruses, small groups and as a soloist, met Margaret Curtis, also a music
education student with a major in piano. They became tenor and
accompanist, and kept a friendship that extended past graduation. He was
drafted and served in the Korean War for 22 months (in theater).
Upon returning from the service, he picked up his friendship with
Margaret…actually, continued his friendship which was blossoming into
love. They married in 1955, in Governeur, NY (Margaret’s home town) and
moved to Orange County where both had teaching jobs. Ultimately, he began
teaching at Newburgh Free Academy and in 1959, their first child Michael
was born. I came along in 1963. A brief time as a John Hay Fellow at
Harvard in 1965, another few years at NFA and then we were blessed for him
to get a job at Salem State College, in Salem MA. It was in the Boston
area that his devotion to all things musical flourished. In 1971, he
auditioned for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, an all volunteer chorus to
accompany the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston and during their summer
residence at Tanglewood in Lenox, MA. In 1972, Margaret auditioned
and we embarked upon the life of “chorus brats” every summer. As an
assistant, and then associate professor of Music at Salem State, he gained
notoriety as a passionate conductor, and gifted composer. He
encouraged the music staff to show off their talents by presenting a
regular concert billed as “Itself”. For 25 years, he performed, conducted,
and composed his way around the metropolitan Boston area. In 1994,
he retired from Salem State College and moved to Calabash, NC. As always,
musicians rarely fully retire. He continued to be active as a member
of the Community Choral Society in Myrtle Beach, as a section leader in
the Trinity Episcopal Church Choir, and then as a second vice president on
the board of directors for the Long Bay Symphony Orchestra. He passed away
at home, after a courageous battle with cancer – starting in the prostate,
ending with bone cancer.
My mom & I were at his side
as he passed. If you met him, you loved him. He was just that
charming.
Steve Fraas 69 fraasllc@gmail.com Very sad to hear of his passing. Mr. Aquino was an awesome teacher. I was under his tutelage in Madrigal singers, and many other choral groups. I can still see him "bouncing" up and down and slamming his conductors baton on the music stand becrying our "Hudson Valley Twang!". Truly loved the man. I am sure he touched many people in his course of life... I will always remember him.
Joseph A. Dubaldi, Jr 66 sj0111@usma.edu I remember Mr Aquino as a great inspiration in the music field. I sang in as many groups as I could during high school at NFA. I remember singing in his groups and how good he was to his students. He will be solely missed.
Sandra Marro-Boes '57 flower1939@optonline.net I was a student at NFA when Mr. Aquino came to teach. I knew from the start that he was a wonderful inspiration to all the students. I can't remember what choral groups he conducted but I know I was in a couple of them. He was respected by the students and in return he respected them. I thoroughly enjoyed my years in the music dept. in part to Mr. Aquino.
Patricia Shanahan pshanfrsp@hotmail.com
I was his student at Salem State, graduating in 1972. I have since retired
from teaching, but remember him well. Last week I attended the Cuban
Symphony in Worcester, Mass on their first US tour, and was telling my
husband about him. One of his finals was to identify a random series of
movements from many symphonies by composer and work title, which I spent a
great deal of time mastering and have never forgotten. Wonderful musician
and teacher. I am so sorry for your and our loss
Benjamin, Robert Died 1992 Born May 16, 1948 in Brooklyn NY Died March 28, 1992
Submitted by Sharon Terwilliger Broder 1965 broder1@juno.com Bob Benjamin died in an automobile accident on the thruway on his way to a math meet to join his students in Albany. Bob was a student teacher when I taught in NJHS. He went on to NFA where he became a loved and respected math teacher by those students lucky enough to have him. His sudden death took with it an asset of NFA's math department and a great person way too soon.
Submitted by Rose Cadden, Class of 1985rosecadden@yahoo.com Mr.
Benjamin was one of my math teachers in NJHS. He was the type of teacher
that made learning fun. When he saw that I was having difficulty he
would stay late and tutor me and work with me. He wanted all of his
students to succeed. He had a beautiful wife and daughters and they were
his pride. He truly loved his family and would speak of them often.

Bresnan, Daniel J. 69, a retired teacher of European history
at Newburgh Free Academy, died on May 27, 2007 at the Kaplan Family
Hospice in Newburgh. He maintained homes on Yankee Lake and in Jensen
Beach, Fla. Dan spent much of his life enjoying all that he could.
Friends will recall stories of his frequent travels, spanning from
childhood trips to Europe with his mother, to more recent travels to the
Caribbean and Mexico. Reminiscence would be followed by grand plans for
the next adventure, planned from a dog-eared travel book, marked with an
ever-present pencil kept conveniently tucked under his watch. Dan also
had a great fondness for food. Not just any food and not always in great
quantity, but very specific meals: lamb with peas, Flounder Oreganata
and, especially, duck from Gus's. Of the many things that Dan enjoyed,
none compared to spending time with his family and friends at his
beloved home on Yankee Lake. Those who gathered for the many dinners
there, will not soon forget them. Dan is survived by cousins, many
friends, and his cat, Ginger. he was predeceased by his father, Daniel
J. Bresnan, and by his mother, Rita Bresnan-Forrestal. In lieu of

Brown, William Died 1982 The 1943 Yearbook stated he joined the service in 1942
Posted by Bob Wilson 52
Mr. Brown was my favorite teacher (Science) at NJHS back in 1946-1949,
(and an excellent one at that) before he went on to NFA in later years.
He was tough, and brooked no nonsense particularly from unruly 7th Grade
boys. His technique...take them out into the hall and gently bang their
backsides onto a doors of one of the lockers in the corridor while
giving them a brief but forceful lecture on how to behave. He was in
charge of the NJHS Science Club back then, and one of the members'
responsibilities was operating any one of the school's Ampex film
projectors, especially the one in the auditorium booth that showed the
"G.O." commercial movies twice a year. It was an honor for me, as a 7th
grader, to be in a club with such great "upperclassmen" that year as Al
Mazzarelli Nat Zutty and Tommy Fletcher. I was in Hog Heaven.

Burmeister, Graham 94, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Heaton Woods Assisted Living in Montpelier. Graham was born Jan. 14, 1917, in New Brunswick, N.J., the son of Julius and Elsie, nee Graham, Burmeister. He was educated in Yonkers and Queens, N.Y., and later in Tenafly and Passaic, N.J. Graham left high school in order to pursue his career as an artist and sculptor. He worked at the Roman Bronze foundry in New York, and then he became an inspector at the Brewster Aircraft defense assembly plant in Long Island City. Drafted into the Army Air Corps, Graham served as an artist, attaining the rank of Tech 4, a specialist grade that was the wartime equivalent of sergeant. He served in various posts in the southeastern U.S. and completed his national service at the Recruiting Publicity Bureau at Governors Island, N.Y. The love of Graham's life was his wife, Miriam, whom he married in 1942. Their first child, Peter, was born on an air base while Graham was serving his country. After the war, Graham, Miriam and their young son moved to Wallkill, N.Y., where the couple was to make their home for the next 61 years in the house that Graham designed. Their children, now including daughter Alice and younger son Paul, were raised in Wallkill. Graham was an intellectual with a strong interest in culture and the arts. In 1964, he decided to complete the high school education he had abandoned as a teenager, and received his GED. He then enrolled in the State University College at New Paltz, N.Y., where he received a Bachelor of Science and then a Master of Science in art education. Immediately following his university graduation, he began a new career as an art teacher at Newburgh Free Academy, Newburgh, N.Y., until his retirement in 1982. Thereafter Graham and Miriam divided their time between their homes in Wallkill and Daytona Beach, Fla., and traveled widely throughout North and South America and Europe. In 2003, Graham and Miriam moved to Hanover, N.H., to be closer to their sons in Vermont and Massachusetts. Miriam passed away in 2007, after which Graham moved again, this time to Heaton Woods. Throughout his long life, Graham was a prolific visual artist. His numerous oil paintings grace the homes of his children and grandchildren and comprise an impressive collection of neo-impressionistic painting in the tradition of Paul Cezanne. He also created various sculptures, including portrait busts and full-length compositions. Graham's work was seen in recent years at a group show in Montpelier as well as individual exhibits in Montpelier and in Hanover, N.H. After moving to Vermont, Graham continued to paint and enthusiastically participated in life drawing classes in Montpelier, where he made many friends. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Graham was an avid designer, builder and flier of model airplanes, many of them powered, with radio controls. Graham is survived by his children: Peter (Katherine Fanelli), of Montpelier; Paul (Gail Young), of Concord, Mass.; and Alice Tawresey (John), of Bainbridge Island, Wash. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Heather, Gwendolyn, Victoria, Parke (Sarah Plimpton) and Taylor Burmeister; Betsy Twitchell (Kyle); Caitlin Badowski (Nate); Anna Puchalski (Steve); and Steven Tawresey; as well as three great-grandchildren. His cousin, Julie Freestone, and her partner, Rudi Raab, also survive. Anyone wishing to give a donation in remembrance of Graham should direct it to Heaton Woods, 10 Heaton St., Montpelier, VT 05602. (Heaton Woods is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving central Vermont seniors.) Our family wishes to thank Peggy Roque and her incredible staff for the loving care and kindnesses given to Graham and to all of us while he was in residence at Heaton Woods. Graham's passing leaves a void in our hearts, but we rejoice in his legacy of artistic creation that is the tangible gift to us all; of talent, creative spirit and artistic vision. A service of remembrance will be held at Heaton Woods on Wednesday, May 11, at 2 p.m.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughter and son-in-law, Davida and Brad Franz of Cincinnati, Ohio; her daughter, Juanita Gable of Boulder, Colo.; and her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Alicia Simms of Greenville, S.C. She is also survived by her mother, Rosella Hartley of Indianapolis, Ind.; and her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Rex Joseph, also of Indianapolis, Ind. She was also greatly loved by her three beautiful grandchildren, Odessa and Novella Franz, and Michael "Mikey" Simms; and her nieces and nephew and their families and, of course, her many friends. She was predeceased by her loving father, Kelso Hartley. Pat was born on March 22, 1942 and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. She received a BS degree in Business Administration from Indiana University, a BA in Visual Arts from S.U.N.Y. New Paltz, and a Masters Degree in Art Education also from S.U.N.Y. New Paltz. She worked for over 15 years as an educator for many schools in the Hudson Valley including schools in Newburgh, Kingston, Spring Valley, N.Y., and West Point. In the last years of her life she worked tirelessly as a substitute teacher at Newburgh Free Academy. Pat served as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee for the Newburgh Teachers' Association's Substitute Chapter. Prior to that, she was the Vice-Chairperson. Pat was on the negotiating team for their most recent Substitute Contract, which the chapter ratified in October. She was very active in representing the Substitutes of Newburgh. Pat attended the N.T.A. Delegate Assemblies, and voted on behalf of the subs; she was their voice. In addition, she attended the N.T.A. Leadership Conferences and diligently represented the substitutes for whom she served. The teachers, staff, students, and substitutes will miss Pat's persistent presence and effort to better all involved. Pat was also a gifted artist, and was active in the "art scene" throughout the area. She was a long time member of the Newburgh Artists Salon, participating in open studio events, and the arts community in general. She had a wonderful creativity about her, always fearlessly taking on new challenges, and was always admired for her creative courage! Pat was also a committed member of the Middletown Art Group where she served as Secretary to the organization and participated in all of their recent expositions. She also studied at the Garrison Arts Center in Garrison, N.Y. and painted there every Saturday morning. Pat also loved choral music. Most recently, she sang the Messiah at the West Point Chapel with the combined choruses present on Sunday, December 3, 2006. Beyond, art, teaching, and music, Pat also volunteered at Winter Haven, the homeless center in the Newburgh Ministry building in Newburgh, and also served a term on the Board of Open Space, a program for teen mothers located at St. George's Church. Shapiro, Ronald - Born 31 July 1937 Died 14 May 1999 Place of death Newburgh, NY 1955 NFA Graduate
Posted by Pauline Rute Hall 52 Ron Shapiro, former principal of Newburgh Free Academy died yesterday at the age of 61. The cause of death was complications from a lung disorder, said his son, Jeffrey Shapiro, "Ronnie" to friends and co-workers, was part of Newburgh's fabric. News of his death hit the city hard NFA, as well as Meadow Hill elementary school, will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. Monday so colleagues can attend a memorial service in his honor. "He was a native," said Runston "Pop" Lewis, Newburgh school board president. Shapiro loved golf, playing gin, and needling – and being needled – by friends, they recalled. Lewis described Shapiro as "strong-willed." "He knew what he wanted and he knew what he wanted to do and anything he wanted he would go at it aggressively," Lewis said. That means rising up through the school district from art teacher to assistant principal to eventually Newburgh Free Academy principal – after a year as assistant superintendent. He also umpired softball. When other's scoffed, Shapiro seemed even more motivated. Like when he decided to clean up the high school and plant flowers. "No one thought the kids would have let (the flowers) last, but they did," Lewis said. North Junior High Principal Peter Copeletti was Shapiro's art student in 1967. "He was a very firm and fair teacher, someone that had the utmost respect for," Copeletti said. It was a respect that lasted long after Copeletti graduated and became a teacher. When Shapiro was assistant principal at Meadow Hill elementary school, he took Copeletti, a young student teacher, under his wing. When Copeletti was named NFA principal last month, he received congratulations from Shapiro – and a tip. "His advice to me was to be a risk taker, accept the challenge," Copeletti said. "Ronnie was always a leader who was out front. He was such a charismatic leader, he really was." And it rubbed off on those who worked with and for him. "He had a lot of enthusiasm which everyone caught," said NFA Principal Tom Fogarty. Fogarty, who is retiring at the end of this year, was vice principal and worked side by side Shapiro for more than nine years when Shapiro was NFA principal. Shapiro became NFA principal in the early 1980s after years racial unrest across the country and here in Newburgh. He brought stability to the school. With Shapiro at the head, NFA received a National High School of Excellence Award. He was "a breath of fresh air," Fogarty said. "He was able to make NFA shine." A funeral service is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Coloni Funeral Home on Route 9W in New Windsor. Visitation is noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday.

I was in the class of 56 but previous to that I was a member of Civil
Air Patrol as a cadet. Mr Watkins was in charge of our class and was
extremely knowledgeable concerning Aircraft and Aircraft engines. While
in 12th grade, I was in his Automobile Repair class where he had actual
Aircraft engines mounted so they could be turned on. He was a super
teacher and as I remember, was very easy to communicate with. As a
teenager, that was difficult with many teachers, but not with Mr
Watkins. He was a real gem.
