Gillespie, Joyce Walker Dear all, ....it is with a sad heart I bring you the news of Joyce's passing. She died at her daughter Kathy's home, on Wednesday, January 28th, surrounded by many members of her family. I had last spoken to Joyce on December 29th and she was in pretty good spirits, but she did say that she was getting pretty tired of the whole affair, and that she was ready to move on. ...... I had known Joyce since our early years at Liberty Street School, on into South Junior High and right on through NFA...as had many of you. Then of course there was a lapse of many years as we all went our separate and various ways. She and I rekindled our friendship at one of the NFA class reunions. I hope you will have as many wonderful memories of her as I do. There will be a wake on Sunday, February 1st, at 2-4PM and then again at 7-9PM. It will be at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, 845-561-8300. There will be a church service on Monday, February 2nd at 11AM at St. Andrew's Church, 15 Walnut Street in Walden. Burial will be after that in Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor. If you need any further information please call the funeral home at 845-561-8300. Sympathy cards can be sent to Joyce's daughter, Kathy Settembrino, 11 Cameli Drive, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. Hack, Robert Jefferson ("Bob") III of Leawood, Kansas, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 11, 2009, following a battle with pancreatic cancer that he waged with grace, courage and humor. A 4th of July baby born in 1937, to Roberta C. and Robert J. Hack II in Newburgh, NY, Bob made it a point to enjoy life with the family he held so dear and with his many friends. Bob fondly remembered his childhood years in Newburgh, expressing admiration and appreciation for the values instilled by his parents, and love for his younger brother and sister, Jon and Wendy. An inveterate sports fan, Bob's love of basketball began with his buddies in Newburgh schoolyards and gymnasiums and later found expression through his enthusiastic and boisterous support of Jayhawks basketball. Always intelligent - and often a smart aleck - Bob thoroughly enjoyed his college career, from challenging studies and professors to bonding with fraternity brothers to competing in intramural athletics. He graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York in 1959, and it was during Bob's Hobart years that he met Nancy Cameron, who became the love of his life. On June 18, 1960, Bob married Nancy Wright Cameron and together they raised three children: Robert, Cameron and Catherine. Bob and Nancy's career and family path began in upstate New York and Bob's job with W.T. Grant took him to numerous posts in New York and Pennsylvania, culminating as a district manager in Kansas City in 1971, which is when Bob brought his family to Leawood. In the mid-1970's W.T. Grant went out of business, facing Bob and Nancy with a life choice: move the family back to the east coast and continue his retail business career, or stay in Kansas City and change careers. Even though his career to that point had been devoted exclusively to retail management and even though Bob and Nancy had spent all but five years of their lives on the east coast, the wishes of their children and the warmth of Kansas Citians proved irresistible. Bob began selling real estate for Jay's Realty, then moved into real estate management, first with J. Lester Brown and then with Jay's Realty and, finally, serving as a consultant for Coldwell Banker in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. First and foremost, Bob loved his family, with special fondness for his grandchildren - Alexa and Kyle Webber and Celia and Miranda Hack. He also loved sports, his dogs (Bob loved them all, but Rudy, Echo and most recently, Star, were three of his favorites) and lifelong learning, and he also loved his work, maintaining full and active employment well past his 70th birthday, stopping reluctantly only after pancreatic cancer sapped his strength too much to travel on the job. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Bob will be remembered and loved by his wife Nancy; his three children and their spouses, Rob (Laura Starr), Cam (Rose Hack) and Catherine Webber (Scott Webber); his four grandchildren, Alexa Webber, Kyle Webber, Celia Hack and Miranda Hack; his sister, Wendy Jones; and friends across the country too numerous to count. Bob's family would especially like to thank the many friends who provided so much support since his diagnosis in March 2008. Your visits, phone calls, cards, letters, and entries on Bob's Carepages website warmed, comforted and engaged him and us greatly, easing a difficult time and demonstrating that Bob had lived his life well. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009, at the Unity Church of Overland Park (10300 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS, 66212) where Bob was a member for many years. Please join us after the service for a celebration of Bob's life. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorial contributions in Bob's name to any of the following: Unity Church of Overland Park, 10300 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66212; Kansas City Hospice, 9221 Ward Parkway Ð Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64114 ( www.kansascityhospice.org ); Turning Point, 8900 State Line Road, Suite 240, Leawood, KS 66206 (www.turningpointkc.org). Turning Point, the Center for Hope and Healing, offers tremendous services to individuals with serious or chronic physical illnesses, and family members. Shapiro, Ronald Born 31 July 1937
Died 14 May 1999 Place of death Newburgh,
NY former principal of Newburgh Free Academy died yesterday at the
age of 61. The cause of death was complications from a lung disorder,
said his son, Jeffrey Shapiro, "Ronnie" to friends and co-workers,
was part of Newburgh's fabric. News of his death hit the city hard
NFA, as well as Meadow Hill elementary school, will dismiss at 10:30
a.m. Monday so colleagues can attend a memorial service in his honor.
"He was a native," said Runston "Pop" Lewis, Newburgh school board
president. Shapiro loved golf, playing gin, and needling – and being
needled – by friends, they recalled. Lewis described Shapiro as
"strong-willed." "He knew what he wanted and he knew what he wanted to
do and anything he wanted he would go at it aggressively," Lewis said.
That means rising up through the school district from art teacher to
assistant principal to eventually Newburgh Free Academy principal –
after a year as assistant superintendent. He also umpired
softball. When other's scoffed, Shapiro seemed even more
motivated. Like when he decided to clean up the high school and plant
flowers. "No one thought the kids would have let (the flowers) last, but
they did," Lewis said. North Junior High Principal Peter Copeletti was
Shapiro's art student in 1967. "He was a very firm and fair teacher,
someone that had the utmost respect for," Copeletti said.It was a
respect that lasted long after Copeletti graduated and became a teacher.
When Shapiro was assistant principal at Meadow Hill elementary school,
he took Copeletti, a young student teacher, under his wing. When
Copeletti was named NFA principal last month, he received
congratulations from Shapiro – and a tip. "His advice to me was to be a
risk taker, accept the challenge," Copeletti said. "Ronnie was always a
leader who was out front. He was such a charismatic leader, he really
was." And it rubbed off on those who worked with and for him. "He had a
lot of enthusiasm which everyone caught," said NFA Principal Tom
Fogarty. Fogarty, who is retiring at the end of this year, was vice
principal and worked side by side Shapiro for more than nine years when
Shapiro was NFA principal. Shapiro became NFA principal in the early
1980s after years racial unrest across the country and here in Newburgh.
He brought stability to the school. With Shapiro at the head, NFA
received a National High School of Excellence Award. He was "a breath of
fresh air," Fogarty said. "He was able to make NFA shine." A funeral
service is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Coloni Funeral Home on
Route 9W in New Windsor. Visitation is noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday.
