Berger, Harvey died 8/9/07 Innovator who co-founded Ulster
business is remembered Man invented ultrasonic nozzles... HYDE PARK -
Friends and family members continued Sunday to mourn the death of local
pioneer and entrepreneur Harvey Berger. Berger, who co-founded the
Milton-based company Sono-Tek Corp. in 1975, died Thursday after a
struggle with liver cancer. He was 68. Berger's wife, Donna, said he was
diagnosed with cancer in mid-March. Although he was ill, he stayed in
contact with the company. He was scheduled to undergo an experimental
treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on July 19. He
started having complications before he could receive the treatment and
had to be admitted to the hospital for internal bleeding. He was
released from the hospital about two weeks later. "I think we're all a
little numb and still in shock," Donna Berger said. "It happened very
quickly. We went from having a very optimistic approach to having a very
rapid downturn over the past couple of weeks."....... Received doctorate
in 1969 .....Berger, who served as the company's chief technology
officer, earned his doctorate in nuclear physics from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in 1969. He co-founded Sono-Tek after he invented
ultrasonic spray nozzles with multiple uses: Low-impact spraying ,
reduced overspraying and the spraying of substances in minute
quantities. Since the company was founded, his invention has proven to
be useful in the electronics, medical and food industries........ "I
think he was one of the brightest people I've ever known in my life,"
Donna Berger said. "He was very special and the love of my life. He was
very devoted to his career and also to all of the people he loved and
his Sono-Tek family. He was very proud of starting that company and he
loved his work." Sono-Tek, which went public in the late 1980s, employs
50 people, Chief Executive Officer Chris Coccio said. He said the
company's operations shouldn't experience major changes with Berger's
death. "Harvey did a god job over the years of training and educating
our younger crop of engineers so the knowledge transfer has taken place
through his books and his internal lectures," Coccio said. "He did a
wonderful job of bringing the younger people up to speed."
